Chapter 159 Latching On

How could it be Alfred?

He knew perfectly well that this had something to do with Zoey. Instead of helping her erase the traces, how could he hand over an investigation report that could convict Zoey to Professor Fred?

Nella frowned, her eyes filled with complexity and undisguised confusion.

“That kid can be pretty infuriating sometimes, but this time, he actually did a decent job.”

Caleb spoke slowly, his expression a little awkward. “Nella, don’t blame me for speaking up for him.

“I heard you two have been having some conflict lately, so I thought I’d try to smooth things over a bit. This time, he must know he messed up and is trying to apologize in his own way, right?”

It was understandable that Caleb would think this way.

After all, he didn’t know they were already living apart and on the verge of divorce.

Older folks always hope the younger ones can keep things peaceful.

Besides, it was obvious that Caleb genuinely admired Alfred.

Back when he introduced Alfred to her, his eyes practically lit up when he talked about him.

Alfred might not have been a very competent husband, but in other aspects, he really was outstanding.

Caleb truly wanted her to have a perfect partner.

“I understand, Professor.”

Nella nodded and didn’t say much more.

She had been shocked at first about why Alfred helped her when she got the investigation results, but after thinking it through, it made sense.

Just like he said yesterday, he didn’t want her reputation to affect the Keywood Group’s stock price.

Even though she knew this clearly, she didn’t refuse Caleb’s goodwill.

“Professor Fred, the Macks are here.”

At that moment, Caleb’s secretary pushed the door open and reminded him softly.

“Let’s go,” Caleb said to Nella.

Inside the hospital’s family reception room, Zoey and her parents were already there.

When Nella and the others walked in, Norris stood up first and walked toward them.

“Professor Fred, I heard you’ve already figured out what caused my son’s incident.”

Caleb nodded and cast a meaningful glance at Zoey.

Perhaps feeling guilty, Zoey’s expression changed slightly when Caleb looked at her.

But thinking that she had acted discreetly and that there was no way they could find out, Zoey steadied herself and sat up straight.

“Let’s sit down and talk,” Caleb said.

He took the lead and sat at the conference table in the reception room.

Nella and the other hospital administrators followed and took their seats.

After the Macks sat down, Norris spoke.

“Professor Fred, since the investigation is complete, please tell us what you’ve found.”

Caleb nodded and signaled to the assistant standing by the projector.

“Caleb, I know you’re a fair and upright person. Since the evidence is solid, you wouldn’t protect your own people, right?”

Zoey suddenly spoke up. The words were directed at Caleb, but her gaze pointed at Nella.

“Of course. I won’t protect my own people, and I certainly won’t let someone with ulterior motives off the hook. Ms. Mack, rest assured.”

Zoey had called him “Caleb” to deliberately sound closer, but Caleb’s “Ms. Mack” was like a bucket of cold water poured over her.

Clearly, Zoey heard it too.

Caleb was subtly telling her not to latch on.
