Norris sat on the couch across from her and spoke coldly, “At this point, you’re still this naive? You don’t seriously think this whole thing ends with just an online apology, do you?”
Zoey froze slightly, her eyes filling with resentment.
“Dad, what do you mean? Are they trying to hurt me too?”
“Hurt you?” Norris snapped sharply.
“What you did this time is a criminal offense. If the hospital reports it to the police, don’t think you can just brush it off. Nella asking you to apologize online-do you really think it’s just an apology?”
Zoey’s face turned deathly pale. “Are you saying … Nella will still have the hospital call the police?”
“What else? Such a perfect chance to ruin you. Do you think Nella would let it go?”
The more Norris spoke, the angrier he got. “Even if Nella holds back for Alfred’s sake and chooses not to report it, what about Caleb? Given how protective he is, do you think he won’t?”
That finally made Zoey panic.
“T-then what do we do? Nella is so scheming. She definitely won’t let me off easily.”
Zoey’s eyes burned with hatred as she spoke. “I knew it. There’s no way she’d just let me apologize online. She was only pretending to be generous in front of Alfred. That scheming bitch.”
Norris had nothing to say about his daughter’s mix of stupidity and malice.
Even now, she still believed Alfred would protect her unconditionally.
“Honey, if the hospital really calls the police, Zoey won’t actually go to jail, will she?”
Eileen finally started to panic as well.
Norris frowned. After a long moment, he said, “That caregiver took our money. In front of the police, he’ll insist it was because Patrick humiliated him and looked down on him for being a caregiver. In a moment of anger, he came up with the plan to teach Patrick a lesson.”
He paused, his gaze complicated as it fell on Zoey.
“I consulted an attorney who specializes in these kinds of criminal cases. When the time comes, you’ll insist that the one million dollars you gave the caregiver’s son wasn’t a bribe to have him hurt Patrick, but money you gave out of sympathy after learning he was terminally ill.
“If Patrick doesn’t press charges, and we don’t either, then even if this turns into a public prosecution case, you should be fine with the right handling.”
Only then did Zoey finally breathe a sigh of relief.
But then she suddenly caught onto something crucial and sprang to her feet.

“So when Alfred said I transferred the money to Martin back then, I didn’t have to admit it at all. Why did I fall for his trick so easily?”
Thinking about it now, Zoey’s face was full of regret.
She regretted admitting it too quickly.
Watching the deep remorse on his daughter’s face, Norris found her more terrifying than ever.
This time, she had nearly caused Patrick’s death. Whether intentional or not, he couldn’t see a shred of guilt or fear on her face.
The only thing she regretted was not hiding what she’d done well enough. Only that Alfred had found out.
Nothing more.
Norris couldn’t help but wonder, If one day, I stood in her way, would she also find a way to get rid of me?
