It was Jasmine. She was Nella’s old roommate from university and a close friend. They were now working together in cardiac surgery at Apex Medical University Hospital.

Nella turned and waved.

But the moment Jasmine came up, her eyes were already red, tears welling up before she could even speak.

That surprised Nella.

“What’s wrong? Did Mason annoy you again?”

The mention of Mason made Nella frown, irritation flashing in her eyes.

Everyone around Alfred acted like they were better than everyone else and looked down on people.

Back then, Mason had been the one chasing Jasmine, and he did it with flashy moves.

He went after her so intensely that everyone at Apex Medical School knew about the Harts’ handsome, devoted heir.

People even gushed about how rare it was for a rich guy to really fall for someone.

But that “devoted” guy ended up cheating less than a year into the marriage with some third- tier actress.

Now, whenever Nella heard the word “devoted”, she felt secondhand embarrassment for him.

Jasmine wiped her tears and shook her head. “No, it’s not about him.”

She looked at Nella. “I just feel sorry for you.”

Nella blinked, then smiled. “Why?”

Jasmine’s eyes were still red, like she could start crying any

second.

“Nella, I know everything.”

Nella seemed to understand immediately. Her face stiffened. Her lips moved, but no words

came out.

“There was an avalanche in Glimmering Isles. Your hotel was close to that area, right? Those five days you disappeared… It wasn’t just a bad signal. Something happened to you, didn’t it?”

Nella wanted to deny it, but Jasmine jumped in first.

“Don’t lie. Your hotel couldn’t have missed the avalanche. You finally got the chance to go there -you wouldn’t just stay holed up. Something happened, didn’t it?”

Tears started falling from Jasmine’s eyes again uncontrollably.

Nella let out a sigh, patted Jasmine’s shoulder, and said, “Look, I’m alive, aren’t I?

“They say surviving a disaster brings luck. I’ve got plenty of it coming my way.”

She thought of what Lyra had told her on the plane and tried to use that to soothe Jasmine. But her words also confirmed Jasmine’s guess.

Jasmine cried even harder.

“I knew it! I knew something had happened to you! And Alfred … What a jerk! How could he leave you like that and pretend nothing happened, all while traveling with Zoey?! What does he even take you for?!”

The harder she wept, the sharper her words became. She tore into Alfred from every angle.

Nella just nodded and kept wiping Jasmine’s tears.

“Stop crying. People are staring. I’m okay now. That’s what matters. Really. It’s fine.”

Comforting wasn’t Nella’s strong suit, so she repeated a few lines.

Finally, Jasmine calmed down a little, though her eyes were still red. She glared at Nella, furious and disappointed. “After all that, you’re not going to forgive Alfred, are you?”

Nella froze, then smiled and shook her head. “With him, it was never about forgiveness. Honestly, he didn’t even need to come on that trip with me.”
