Nella wanted to tell Jasmine that she and Alfred weren’t that close, so there was no reason to get so worked up over him.
But to Jasmine, it sounded like Nella was still making excuses for him. That set her off.
“You’re still defending him? You’re his wife, but he doesn’t even have to be with you, and somehow he’s got time to hang out with that fake-sweet Zoey? You … you’re driving me crazy!”
Jasmine was practically bouncing with anger.
Nella tried to calm her down. “No, I’m not defending him. I just-”
“Just what? Don’t even think about making excuses for him!”
Jasmine was fuming. “Birds of a feather! Everyone in Mason’s circle is a jerk!”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it.”
Nella should’ve realized it sooner, but at least she saw it clearly now.
“What I mean is …

After thinking it over, Nella finally explained that her marriage to Alfred was just a contract.
Jasmine stared at her, completely shocked, not saying a word for a long moment.
After a full minute, she finally spoke, still a little dazed.
“So… you two are a fake couple?”
Technically, they had a marriage license, so Nella wasn’t sure “fake” was totally accurate.
But when it came to feelings, it was definitely fake.
“The contract ends in two months?” Jasmine asked.
Nella nodded.
“Yeah. With just two months left, I’m not wasting any more energy on anything related to Alfred. Love or hate, it’s all pointless. I’ve got to focus on what’s ahead.”
Jasmine’s expression softened at last.

“Okay, I’ve been off work for half a month, and now there’s a ton waiting. Time to get back to it.”
Nella grabbed Jasmine’s arm and led her toward the cardiac surgery wing.
“When you finalize your divorce, let Professor Quill find someone solid for you. Don’t settle for trash like Alfred again.”
She meant Nella’s mother, Felicia, who was also Jasmine’s graduate advisor.
“Got it. When I pick a boyfriend next time, I’ll be more careful.”
Once they checked back in, they went their separate ways to focus on work.
Because Nella had taken a long vacation, she was immediately handed a pile of patients waiting for surgery.
Cardiac surgery was always nonstop. That half month in Glacieroth had taken every favor she could get and every spare moment she could squeeze out, switching shifts with colleagues just to make it work.
Another long break like that? Probably impossible.
After a hectic morning, Nella finally grabbed a sip of water, and her phone lit up on the desk.
She picked it up automatically and was surprised to see a message from Alfred.
“I just finished a project near your hospital. Lunch together?”
It was totally unexpected. It was the first time Alfred had ever texted her to ask her out.
Back then, she’d imagined stuff like that.
But it had only ever been daydreams.
For one, she and Alfred weren’t a normal couple and didn’t need dates.
For another, the hospital and Keywood Group were on opposite sides of town, and their relationship wasn’t close enough to justify going across the city for one meal.
