Chapter 222 Ridiculous
“You actually thought I was cheating on you with another man?”
No wonder he kept asking why she liked Marshal so much.
No wonder he acted like he was competing with the dog.
Nella’s face burned with fury. That wasn’t jealousy. That was a full-blown character attack.
“Alfred, I’m not you. If I ever wanted someone else, I’d wait until the divorce was final. I still have a conscience.”
Alfred heard the venom in her voice. His jaw tightened with regret.
“I’m sorry. I made assumptions.”
He wanted to say Camelia had twisted the meaning. That she’d made “puppy” sound like code for something else.
But the second he opened his mouth, he swallowed the words back.
If he said that, it would sound like deflection.

Even if Camelia had misled him, it was his own twisted suspicion that made it worse. He could’ve looked it up. He could’ve asked.
But he didn’t. He clung to that lie and used it as an ammunition against her over and over.
Bringing up Camelia now would only make things worse.
Then her earlier line hit him again-“I’m not like you”-and his whole expression shifted.
His lips parted. He forced the words out.
“I know everyone thinks there’s something going on between me and Zoey.”
He let out a dry, bitter laugh. “And I get it. I let things get blurred/ But Nella…”
He looked her straight in the eye. “If I actually wanted Zoey, I would’ve married her back then. I wouldn’t have waited until after we got married to screw around.”
His voice dropped. So did his
gaze.
“I did give her too much control, and I shouldn’t have. That part’s on me.”
Alfred gripped his hands together. His fingers tensed hard enough to shake.
Nella didn’t even flinch. She looked more amused than mad.
She reached toward the coffee table, grabbed a fistful of trail mix Jasmine left behind, and cradled it in her palm.

Chapter 222 Ridiculous
“I-”
A loud snap came from her direction.
The crack of a peanut shell breaking between her teeth echoed through the room.
Alfred’s eyes jerked upward. She was calmly snacking, acting like this was just casual entertainment.
His expression twisted fast. His glare sharpened with rising heat.
“Could you at least pretend to care?”
His voice came out tight, almost snarling.
Nella held up the handful of trail mix.
“I brought snacks. That’s me being polite.”
Alfred’s face darkened.
“You’re seriously trying to piss me off.”
She wasn’t. She honestly wasn’t.
Nella split the mix in half and offered it to him. “Wanna snack while you ramble?”
“Nella!”
He hissed her name so hard it sounded like it cracked through his teeth.
Finished
She had zero interest in his guilt trip over Zoey. She was just killing time waiting for Richie to show up and drive him out.
If he didn’t want to keep talking, fine. She wasn’t dying to hear it.
Alfred caught the look on her face. That cool, couldn’t-care-less attitude slammed him in the gut. He didn’t know if he should yell or just walk the hell out.

Chapter 223 Keep Going
Alfred finally kept talking.

“I was 16 when it happened. My mom was driving when a semi slammed into us. We flew off the road and crashed into a ditch. Nobody was around. We blacked out. When I came to, the medics were loading both of us into the ambulance.
“Later, we found out Zoey was the one who pulled us out before the car exploded. She dragged us out by herself.
“She inhaled so much toxic smoke that day her lungs got destroyed. Since then, she’s never been able to do anything physical. She’s always sick, always on meds. That whole thing wrecked her life. She ended up with depression, too.”
Alfred looked at Nella.
She was still munching on the trail mix like nothing was happening. She hadn’t said a single word the whole time.
She looked like she was just watching someone else’s drama unfold-like this didn’t even involve her.
“That’s why I’ve always felt like I owed her. My mom didn’t survive. Her injuries were too severe. If Zoey hadn’t pulled her from the driver’s seat, there wouldn’t have been anything left.
“I’ve always believed I should repay her.”
But in doing that, he’d ignored everyone else.
He never stopped to think about how it looked. He never thought about Nella.
He never once considered what it felt like to constantly be second place. And after so much disappointment, she couldn’t take it anymore.
When he finished, he looked her way and said it flat-out.
“I’m sorry, Nella.”
Nella set the trail mix back in the snack tray.
Her expression didn’t change. Not once. Still looked like a complete bystander.
When Alfred apologized, she just waved it off like it didn’t matter.
“You don’t need to apologize to me.”
“Nella-”
She raised her hand to shut him down. “Let me talk.”
Alfred frowned. Her calm voice hit a nerve..
Every time she spoke like this, it meant she had stopped caring.
