Chapter 224 Apology

Alfred sat there like a man confessing to a crime. His head stayed down, shoulders heavy, face full of guilt.

Nella didn’t speak for a moment. Then her voice came quiet and even. “You really don’t have to go this far.

Alfred looked up again. His eyes were red at the edges, full of guilt and panic.

Her calm always rattled him. It made him feel helpless.

“Whether Zoey was around or not, the contract’s still the contract. And contracts expire eventually, right?”

“No!”

Alfred snapped back with zero hesitation. “No. It doesn’t have to end. We can renew it. It could last forever!”

His eyes locked onto hers. He wasn’t joking.

“Forever…”

Nella blinked. For a second, her expression wavered.

But then she chuckled softly.

“Mr. Keywood, stop. That’s ridiculous.”

It sounded like a joke.

“You don’t believe me?”

Alfred’s voice turned stubborn. He looked like a man dead set on proving something.

Nella waved a hand, dismissive and uninterested.

“Doesn’t matter if I believe you.”

“It does! It matters a lot!”

His voice rose, full of urgency.

Nella realized he wasn’t letting it go. So she didn’t answer him again.

She stood up, lifted Marshal into her arms, and looked at Alfred flatly.

“I’m tired. Wait for Richie here. Lock the door on your way out.”

Alfred saw the shut-down coming from a mile away. It made him tense and frustrated.

He didn’t get why she kept brushing him off.

What he didn’t realize was that she just didn’t care about his reasons anymore.

“Okay. Forget that part. Let’s talk about Marshal.”

“What about him?”

Nella looked him over.

If he wasn’t trying to take the dog from her, then what was the issue?

“He’s only a month old. He’s injured now. How are you planning to take care of him like this?”

Nella’s brow lifted. She waited for the rest.

“I know your hospital lets you bring pets in. But you can’t keep Marshal next to you while you work, right?”

That hit her.

Even if it was technically allowed, she couldn’t supervise him during her shifts.

She worked with heart patients. People came in all day long, and plenty of them feared dogs.

The fact she worked in cardiology did not help either.

One bad scare, and it could become a full-on emergency.

Marshal was still so tiny, though. He could stay alone at home if he was uninjured, but now the poor pup had a broken rib. He couldn’t handle himself if left alone.

When she’d adopted Marshal, she just didn’t want to let him freeze alone. She wanted the comfort of having a dog. But she hadn’t considered what would happen if something went wrong.

Alfred noticed her silence and kept going.

“Let me take care of him for now. I’ll have the PR team release a few statements. That’ll shut down all the gossip about us having problems. It’ll settle the market and give Marshal the care he needs. What do you say?”
