Chapter 246 Caring Regis

At last, he sighed again. “Nella, did you really only sign that contract just because your grandfather was sick?”

Nella froze. Her expression stiffened as she looked at Regis and forced a small smile.

“Regis…”

He gently patted the back of her hand.

“I might be old, but I’m not clueless. I’ve been young once too. I’ve loved people before. You really think I couldn’t see it? You’ve really had feelings for Alfred for a long time, haven’t you?”

Nella’s smile started to falter.

It stayed on her face for a second, then disappeared completely.

“Silly girl, you can’t hide that kind of thing! Every time you looked at him, it showed in your eyes. Your whole face lights up. That idiot just didn’t see it–but I did.”

Nella didn’t say anything, but her eyes suddenly burned.

She thought she’d buried that feeling so deep no one could see it. But now someone did. Someone told her they saw her pain.

She never considered herself a sentimental person. But right then, Regis’s words hit something raw. The pain rushed to the surface.

Her chest swelled tight. Her throat stung, and her eyes went red again.

“That boy didn’t deserve it. He never even knew how to appreciate it. And now it’s too late, isn’t it?”

Regis watched her closely. His voice stayed calm, but there was something careful in his tone.

He was furious with his grandson, but deep down, he didn’t want to lose her. It’d be a shame if they went their own ways. It’ll be Alfred’s loss.

Nella heard the meaning under his words. She forced another smile.

“Regis, the contract’s almost up.”

The message was clear. Their marriage would be over soon.

He got it. He didn’t press her. He just sighed again, this time deeper. It sounded like regret,

“It’s alright, Regis. Even if I won’t be Alfred’s wife anymore, you can still call me whenever you want a chess partner.”

Regis nodded right away. “Of course. That idiot’s not worth your time anyway. I’ll find someone ten times better for you.”

Nella smiled and nodded. “Thank you, Regis. I’ll hold you to that.”

She knew he was getting older. She didn’t want him staying in a hospital room all day.

“Regis, I’m fine now. You should head home and rest. I’ll check myself out later.”

He didn’t want to keep her up either.

“Alright. I won’t take up your time. Get some rest, okay? I’ll have Alfred handle the discharge paperwork.”

“Okay.”

Regis stood up slowly with the help of his cane and walked toward the door.

“Take care, Regis.”

He reached the doorway and pulled it open.

The moment he saw who was on the other side, his whole face changed. His voice dropped cold.

“What are you doing here?”

Nella turned her head toward the door without thinking.

Alfred stood just outside. He looked like a wreck. His face was pale.

He held a food container in his hand, and his eyes looked lost.

“Grandpa, I brought some food for Nella. She hasn’t eaten anything all day.”
