Her hand froze mid-wipe. Nella looked across at him, confused.

What’s he doing here? Isn’t he here for Mason?

So why is he still hanging around me?

Just then, a few nurses from other departments walked by. Their eyes lit up in surprise when they saw Alfred.

They glanced at Nella with teasing smiles.

“Dr. Milo, is he your boyfriend? He’s so good-looking. Not gonna introduce us?”

Nella felt embarrassed and instinctively glanced at Alfred.

They’d only filed the marriage papers secretly without a ceremony. Aside from a few close friends, no one knew she and Alfred were married.

She also knew he didn’t want anyone to find out.

Hearing the nurses teasing, she worried he might snap at them. She quickly shook her head.

“No. He’s not my boyfriend.”

Nella blurted it out quickly, scared that even a second’s pause might make them misunderstand.

But to Alfred, the tone of her words made it seem like she was eager to push him away.

His expression darkened.

The two nurses noticed his displeasure, realized they’d messed up, mumbled a quick apology,

and darted off.

Nella also caught that flash of irritation in his eyes and hurried to explain, “They were just joking. Don’t take it seriously.”

He looked at her calmly. “Are you really that scared they’ll figure us out?”

Nella had no clue why he’d bring that up. It made no sense.

And how was she supposed to answer without stepping on a mine?

He was the one who insisted on a secret marriage and drafted the contract. Now he was questioning why she denied it.

Her chest heated with irritation.

She furrowed her brows and said sharply, “You’re my husband, right? So I’m not dating you.”

She’d meant it as a quick brush-off.

But somehow, it made him happy. The tension on his face softened.

Even his eyes had a little sparkle.

“You didn’t tell them I’m your husband either.”

Nella thought the conversation was over. But today, Alfred was fixated on that small thing.

Her irritation started bubbling.

She furrowed her brows, but forced herself to remain calm. “Our marriage ends in less than two months. No point in making a fuss. If people ask later, it’s just more explaining.”

She tried to sound neutral, but he could still catch the impatience under her words.
