Once they stepped inside the gala hall, Alfred leaned close to her ear and explained in a low voice, careful and tense.
“I didn’t invite her.”
As he spoke, he watched Nella’s face closely, nervous about her reaction.
Nella only gave a quiet grunt, her expression unchanged.
She even kept a polite smile on her face, turning toward the cameras around them. She didn’t let the media catch even a hint of discomfort because of Zoey’s presence.
“But please keep her under control,” Nella added calmly. “Don’t let her bother me.”
She was smiling when she said it, but her words were distant and cold. Alfred felt a bitter ache rise in his chest.
Still, he promised right away, “I’ll have someone escort her out.”
“No need,” Nella said, shaking her head.
“She’s already here. If you make a scene by sending her away, people will only read too much into it.”
She could already imagine the headlines-Mrs. Keywood Gets Jealous at Anniversary Gala, Forces Mr. Keywood to Drive Away His Childhood Friend-and worse.
She only wanted to be an ordinary doctor. She had no desire to become an internet celebrity.
Alfred was about to say something else when a middle-aged couple holding champagne glasses walked over.
“Mr. Keywood.”
Alfred nodded politely. “Commissioner Keller and Mrs. Keller.”
After greeting them, he introduced Nella.
“This is my wife, Nella.”
Eric Keller and Simona Keller nodded to her.
Then Simona smiled and said, “Mrs. Keywood and I actually met once, two years ago.”

“Oh?” Eric asked. “You know Mrs. Keywood?”

“Two years ago, my father had heart surgery at the hospital,” Simona explained. “Mrs. Keywood assisted Professor Fred during the operation.”
“Oh, I see,” Eric said.
Simona nodded and looked at Nella with clear admiration.
“That surgery was very difficult. Dr. Milo worked closely with the lead surgeon, and everything went smoothly. My father still praises Dr. Milo to this day.”
This time, she didn’t call her Mrs. Keywood.
She called her Dr. Milo.
As she spoke, she gave Alfred a meaningful glance, then continued to her husband as if on
purpose.
“My father even thought about introducing Darell to Dr. Milo back then.”
Simona’s maiden name was Holt, and Darell Holt was her nephew.
“We really didn’t expect Dr. Milo to turn out to be Mrs. Keywood,” she added. “Mr. Keywood hid this well. We all thought Dr. Milo was single.”
Whether Simona meant it or not, her words hit Alfred like a hard slap across the face-hot, sharp, and humiliating.
Before things grew more awkward, Nella stepped in and smoothed things over with a smile.
“I’m not very used to events like this,” she said lightly.
Whether she was telling the truth or not, Nella felt she had done her duty as Alfred’s wife at this
moment.
They chatted with Eric and Simona for a while longer. When other guests came over to greet them, the couple excused themselves.
After that, Alfred walked Nella around, introducing her to the other guests invited that evening.
Through it all, Nella handled everything with calm
grace.
But her feet were starting to ache badly.
At the hospital, she was used to wearing flat shoes. Tonight, after walking in high heels for so long, her calves and heels were reaching their limit.
