“Take off the heels,” he said gently. “These will be more comfortable.”

In his hands was a pair of soft, cream-colored leather slippers.

He knelt on one knee and leaned forward, lightly holding her ankle as he reached to take off her shoe.

“I can do it myself,” she said.

But Alfred stayed where he was. One hand steadied her ankle while the other carefully removed her heel and slipped the slipper onto her foot.
