“If I hadn’t recognized the people in the video as my parents,” Zoey said coldly, “do you really think Alfred would have gone to all that trouble to get the video taken down?”
Nella stood frozen where she was. A chill ran through her whole body.
Her hands clenched into tight fists.
She thought of the man who treated Marshal like a precious thing, who held him with such care. And yet, behind her back, that same man had helped hide the person who hurt Marshal. The thought made her stomach twist. Nausea rose in her chest.
Of course, Zoey was Alfred’s childhood sweetheart. She was also the person who had once saved his life.
How could he ever let Zoey’s family get hurt? No matter how adorable Marshal was, in Alfred’s eyes, he was still just a dog.
Just a dog. How could a dog’s life ever compare to Zoey’s?
Nella’s eyes burned red with
anger.
And seeing this reaction at last made Zoey feel satisfied.
She lifted her chin proudly and sneered at Nella.
“I told you already. In Alfred’s heart, you’re nothing. You’re just trash, clinging to a man who doesn’t love you. What’s the point? If you had any shame, you’d divorce Alfred already-”
“Thank you.”
Nella spoke suddenly. The two words stopped Zoey’s proud speech cold.
She stared, confused, not even sure what Nella was thanking her for.
Zoey let out a short laugh. “Have you lost your mind, Nella? You-”
Smack!
The sharp sound of a slap echoed through the air. Zoey’s head snapped to the side. Her words were cut off.
“Nella! How dare you hit me!”
Zoey screamed, furious. When she met Nella’s bloodshot eyes, filled with raw rage, her voice

“Thank you for telling me who the person was that hurt my Marshal,” Nella said slowly. “I didn’t know about this.”
She took one step closer. Zoey thought Nella was about to hit her again. She stumbled backward several steps before stopping. The arrogance in her eyes was gone now. All that remained was fear and caution.
“A mother’s debt gets paid by her daughter,” Nella said. “That slap? I’m just collecting interest.”
She tried hard to hold her anger in, but her voice still trembled.
Zoey was completely frightened. She didn’t dare say another word.
“Now,” Nella said, her tone flat, “you can go cry to Alfred.”
Zoey covered her face, trembling. “Y-you just wait,” she said weakly. “Alfred won’t let this go.”
Throwing out that threat with no real strength behind it, Zoey grabbed her bag and ran away, stumbling as she fled.
Nella stayed where she was, her whole body shaking.
“Nella.”
Jasmine appeared beside her at some point and called her name softly.
Nella slowly lifted her head. Her eyes were red, almost painful to look at.
Her clenched fists finally loosened. Only then did she realize how hard she had been holding herself back, but her fingertips were numb.
She looked at Jasmine and tried to force a smile.
She tried again. And again. She failed every time.
Her lips trembled as she spoke. “I was wrong to trust him again, wasn’t I?”
She tried to sound light, like it didn’t matter. But her voice shook the moment she opened her mouth.
“How am I this stupid?” she whispered. “Just because he was a little nicer to Marshal, I thought I could trust him. I really did. I felt safe handing Marshal over to him.”
She tugged at the corners of her mouth, trying to smile, but nothing came out.
