Alfred didn’t want to hear another word. He opened the car door and got in, Marshal still in his
arms.
“Alfred! Alfred-”
The door shut. Alfred’s face was blank. “Drive.”
“Yes, Mr. Keywood.”
The moment the words fell, Richie hit the gas.
The car shot forward, as if he feared that slowing down even a second would let that scheming woman catch up again.
Zoey’s appearance today left Alfred uneasy. Very uneasy.
What did she say to Nella?
That feeling only grew stronger when his phone rang.
“Hello?”
His voice was careful. “Nella, did you call?”
If this were any other day, he would have been happy. His wife calling him first would usually lift his mood.
But now, he felt none of that. Instead, his chest felt tight. Restless.
Nella asked, “Did you bring Marshal back?”
Her tone sounded normal.
Polite. Distant.
Yet somehow, beneath that distance, he heard something else. Rejection. Even annoyance.
“I just left the office. I’m on my way back.”
His grip on the phone tightened without him noticing.
“Okay. I’ll wait for you.”
“Nella-”

Before he could say more, the call ended.
Alfred stared at the dark screen. His frown deepened.
“Drive faster.”
Thirty minutes later, the car rolled into the East Manor neighborhood.
When Alfred stepped out of the elevator with Marshal in his arms, Nella was already waiting at the door.
“Nella.”
He smiled at her and took two steps forward. Before he could get closer, she stepped in and took Marshal from him.
“Thank you for your help,” she said politely.
Her manners were flawless.
But in her heart, Nella felt nothing but resistance. And more than that-disgust. She knew, logically, that she had no right to control how Alfred protected Zoey. But looking at him now made her feel sick.
Especially when she remembered how he helped Eileen take down the video-the one showing Marshal being abused. That disgust hit its peak.
Alfred felt it clearly.
His instincts told him this had something to do with Zoey.
Nella stopped at her door. She turned back and looked at him.
“Thank you for taking care of Marshal lately, Mr. Keywood,” she said calmly. tomorrow, I won’t trouble you anymore.”
Alfred’s face changed at once.
He reached out and grabbed her arm. His voice was careful. Almost afraid.
“What happened?”
The panic and fear in his eyes grew stronger.
Nella shook off his hand and held Marshal tighter.

“Nothing happened,” she said. “I just think it’s not right to keep bothering you.”
She didn’t even want to argue. She just wanted him away from her. As far as possible.
But the next second, Alfred grabbed her hand again.
His gaze dropped to her pinky. His pupils tightened.
“What happened to your finger? Why is it so swollen?”
Nella looked down at her hand.
Her little finger was badly swollen around the joint. A dull pain throbbed there.
Her anger had been burning so fiercely that she hadn’t noticed it at all.
Only now, after Alfred pointed it out, did the pain finally reach her.
