Alfred gave a short nod. Nella grabbed her empty tray, dropped it off at the return station, and walked away without glancing back.
He stayed put, squinting and watching her walk off.
Something about her seemed different. He knew he wasn’t just imagining it.
“It’s just noon. What brings you to the hospital?”
Mason suddenly appeared next to him. He followed Alfred’s gaze toward Nella and let out a knowing laugh.
“So you went home last night, thought things over, and came back to apologize?”
Alfred frowned and looked at Mason. “You can show up too. Why can’t I?”
Mason shrugged and admitted it without fuss. “I came to apologize to my wife. What about you? Here to apologize to your wife?”
That one question left Alfred speechless.
His pride would never let him admit his fault. He masked it. “I came to have lunch with my wife. Any problem?”
Mason chuckled. “Wow, that’s something. Your office is out east, this hospital is west, and you still came all the way here for lunch.”
He paused, as if remembering something. “When I got here, Nella was already eating with Jasmine. She didn’t wait for you?”
The jab got under Alfred’s skin.
“Nella isn’t the same anymore. My wife doesn’t listen to me either. Those two best friends probably planned to deal with us on purpose.”
Alfred was annoyed and thought Mason was an eyesore. Hearing that, he snapped, “I’m not cheating like you. Why would Nella deal with me?”
He said it coldly and stormed out of the cafeteria.
Mason’s expression darkened. He gritted his teeth and followed. “I didn’t cheat.”
“Why tell me? I’m not your wife.”

“Heh. Right, you didn’t cheat. What you did is worse. What kind of man treats other women better than his own wife?”
“You literally got into another woman’s bed. That’s your idea of being ‘good’ to your wife.”
“Alfred!” Mason exploded, swearing.
Meanwhile, when Nella got back to the surgery building, she found Jasmine sitting in the office, face stormy.
She knocked and stepped in. “What’s wrong? Still can’t sort things out with Mason?”
Jasmine shook her head. “Whatever. If he keeps stalling, I can sue. Or I can transfer, live apart for two years, then sue. Either way, I’ll get a divorce.”
Her voice sounded light, and she gave Nella a small smile. “Two years isn’t long. I’m not rushing to find someone new. Honestly, I’m not stressed-his family is.”
Nella looked at her best friend’s calm face. She caught the bitterness in Jasmine’s eyes and felt a tightness in her chest.
Honestly, Jasmine’s situation wasn’t much better than hers.
When Jasmine married Mason, the Harts opposed it from the start. They mocked her for being an orphan, saying her background wasn’t good enough.
If Mason hadn’t insisted and stood up to his family, they might never have gotten married at
all.
