Danielle didn’t know this was Zoey’s doing. She kept talking, each word hitting harder than the
last.
“I guess Nella just felt it wasn’t worth keeping anymore,” Danielle said. “So, Alfred, I won’t take this deal. If Nella doesn’t want those flowers, what’s the point of planting them again?”
Alfred’s hand shook as he held his glass.
After a long pause, his voice came out rough. “You’re saying those flowers stood for the love she kept hidden in her heart?”
So that was it. No wonder, when Nella saw the flowers on the terrace ruined, she felt pain but even more relief.
When she told him it was time to change, she wasn’t angry. She wasn’t sad. She was calm. Letting go.
What she wanted to change wasn’t the flowers. It was him.
She didn’t want the flowers anymore. And she didn’t want him anymore.
“Honestly,” Danielle went on, “I think you and that other woman suit each other just fine. You’re both great at pretending.”
Oh no!
Archie looked at his girlfriend, who suddenly seemed fearless, and felt a chill run down his spine.
Danielle grabbed her bag and turned to Archie.
“I’ve offended your precious Alfred today. Aren’t you always on his side? Fine. Let’s break up. Just say you dumped me and pledge loyalty to him.”
With that, she walked out without looking back.
Claire met Danielle’s eyes and quietly gave her a thumbs-up.
Danielle lifted her chin, proud, and left the house.
Archie stayed frozen in his chair, his face pale.
It wasn’t until Ryan shoved him hard that he snapped back. He jumped up and ran after her.

“Babe, I don’t want to break up! I don’t want to prove my loyalty! Please, don’t leave me!”
Inside the room, the air grew heavier.
Ryan glanced at Alfred, then at his wife, and slowly stood up.

“Hmm, Brutus is about to give birth. Claire and I should go check on him. Alfred, we’ll head out
too.”
He grabbed Claire and rushed off.
Claire secretly cursed him. Ryan, you idiot. Pick a better excuse. Brutus is male.
“You should go too,” Alfred said quietly to Mason, the only one left.
Mason looked at Alfred’s trembling hand and shook his head to himself.
“Drink less,” Mason said. “You’ve already lost trust with Nella. If you lose your health too, what do you have left to win her back?”
Alfred stopped mid-sip.
After a long time, he set the glass down.
“Do you think I still stand a chance?”
Mason fell silent.
How would I know?
I couldn’t even deal with my marriage.
“That depends on what you do,” Mason finally said. “And whether Nella’s heart is still soft.”
He stood up and added, “Instead of guessing here, go ask her yourself. You’re still married. I think she still has that much sense of right and wrong.”
He gave Alfred a pointed look and added one last jab.
“She’s not as confused as you are.”
Alfred stared at him, face blank. “If you’re so clear-headed, why are you getting divorced?”
That shut Mason up.
Tsk. I seriously shouldn’t waste my time to keep this guy company.
