Chapter 307 Waiting Outside the Door

“Don’t worry. There will be plenty of chances for you to treat me later.”

As he spoke, he lifted the gift Nella had given him and smiled.

“Besides, I already received such a big gift from you today.”

Nella thought about what happened back in Glacieroth. She had asked Wesley to help her buy a phone. He paid for it but never took the money back.

She tried to wire the money to him twice, but both times the money was returned when the transfer expired.

Each time, he would tell her this. “When I return to the country, you can treat me properly then.”

After it happened so many times, Nella had no choice but to stop trying. Still, she always hoped she could repay him somehow.

The custom pen she ordered for Wesley could not compare to those top luxury pens worth millions.

But it still cost her tens of thousands.

Now that he accepted it, she finally felt more at ease.

In the end, she didn’t argue about the bill anymore.

“Alright,” she said. “Next time, I’ll treat you. And you’re not allowed to fight me for the bill.”

Wesley lowered his eyes and laughed softly. “Okay. Next time, I promise I won’t.”

After dinner, Wesley returned to his hotel. Nella drove home with Marshal.

They entered the elevator and went upstairs.

When the elevator doors opened, Nella pushed Marshal out.

The motion-sensor light in the hallway turned on, along with a low, hoarse voice, “Finally home?”

Nella was startled.

When she looked closely, she saw it was Alfred.

He was sitting against the wall by her door.

His face looked tired and worn out.

Alfred’s

eyes showed clear embarrassment and defeat.

“How did you know I was here?” Nella frowned and asked.

Without thinking, she pulled Marshal’s stroller slightly behind her. When she looked at Alfred, her eyes were full of caution and rejection.

The movement wasn’t obvious, but Alfred saw it clearly.

Pain flashed through his eyes.

Marshal, however, recognized him at once. He stood up with his front paws on the edge of the stroller, tongue out, tail wagging happily.

Alfred forced a weak smile and reached out to touch Marshal’s head. But Nella reacted at once and pushed his hand

away.

“What do you think you’re doing?” she asked.

Her gaze turned cold.

That sharp, defensive look—like a cat ready to lash out-made Alfred feel as if his chest had been pierced by countless needles, blood spilling everywhere.

He slowly lifted his eyes to look at her and gave a bitter smile.

“You’re afraid I’d hurt Marshal?” he asked.

He already knew the answer, yet he still asked, humiliating himself.

Nella did not reply, but her expression was a clear yes.

“Is my trustworthiness really that low to you now?” he asked hoarsely.

The corners of his eyes slowly reddened. His lips trembled as he spoke.

Ever since Nella learned from Zoey that Alfred was the one who had taken down the video, she could no longer even keep a calm, businesslike attitude toward him.

Every time she saw him, she imagined his smug face, helping the devil and abusing Marshal.

The idea of “parting on good terms” faded again and again.
