His voice carried a rush of panic, like he was desperate to explain himself to Nella.
“I watched that video. It hurt to see. The only thing I could think of was that it would hurt you even more. I was scared you’d see it, so I had someone take it down.”
Alfred spoke fast, almost tripping over his words. He was afraid that if he paused even for a second, Nella would turn around and leave.
When he finished, he looked at her with a mix of hope and misery. “Please believe me, Nella. Just this once. Please.”
Nella’s expression was exactly the same as Mason’s had been earlier.
Speechless.
With nothing to say.
“I know I did something stupid,” Alfred said, his head lowered as he kept apologizing. “I wanted to protect you, but I only made things worse.”
“Then, should I thank you?”
Nella looked at him, her gaze calm but sharp.
“You only thought about how sad I’d be if I saw Marshal being abused. Did you ever think about how much worse it would feel knowing the person who hurt Marshal is protected by money and power-and that I can’t get justice for him?”
Alfred opened his mouth, then closed it again.
She was right. He had no way to argue.
Alfred knew. What he had done was foolish beyond words.
Even now, he couldn’t understand why he had thought that was the right choice.
“Nella, I know I was wrong,” he said softly. “Please give me a chance to make it right.”
His eyes were full of pleading. He looked small, almost broken.
“I promise I’ll fix everything.”
Nella looked at him. After a short pause, she said, “There’s no need, Mr. Keywood. I’ll take care of this myself. Please don’t stay here. You’re going to disturb my neighbors.”

With that, she turned and went back inside.
“Nella-”
The next second, there was a loud thud.
Nella froze, then turned around. Alfred’s tall body had collapsed onto the floor.
She paused, her brows tightening, and crouched beside him.
Nella reached out and pushed his shoulder.
“Alfred.
“Alfred.”
This time, there was no response.
He was completely unconscious. One hand clutched his stomach. His face was twisted in pain.
Nella stood up and stared at him for a few seconds. Then she went back inside, grabbed her phone, and made a call.
“Sergio,” she said calmly, “Alfred collapsed outside my door. Please come and
Sergio arrived at the apartment complex, his clothes soaked with cold sweat.
On the way there, his mind had been racing.
If my
boss died, where would I find a new boss? What about his seven-figure salary?
What about my future for climbing to the top?
The more he thought about it, the more terrified he became.
He had nearly planned the funeral in his head.
Then he saw his boss.
Curled up on the floor. Pitiful. Miserable.
Sergio let out a long breath.
Thank goodness. Mr. Keywood is still breathing.
My salary is safe!

He looked down at Alfred, then glanced at the tightly closed door in front of him.
“So Mrs. Keywood actually left Mr. Keywood here like an old rag,” Sergio muttered under his breath.
Before coming, he had thought Nella might at least drag his boss inside and let him lie down.
He hadn’t expected her heart to be this cold.
The tall, proud man now lay curled up in the hallway, like a stray dog abandoned in the dark.
