The second he heard the tone in his assistant’s voice, Norris felt his stomach drop. Something was very, very wrong.
He hung up immediately and opened the file his assistant had sent over.
His hands were trembling so hard, he could barely keep hold of the screen.
He pulled up one of the contracts.
The penalty for a breach was just 0.1%.
His fingers shook even harder as he flipped through the rest.
By the time he reached the final one, he collapsed back onto the couch, hopeless.
The highest breach penalty was 0.1%. Some were even 0.01%.
These were projects worth hundreds of millions, even billions. And the penalties? Practically pocket change.
Suddenly, he remembered something.
Back when Alfred had handed Horizon those massive projects, he went out of his way to protect them. He was afraid Horizon couldn’t take on the financial risk if something went wrong. So Alfred personally set the penalties that low.
Back then, several members of the Keywood Group board had objected. It was Alfred who promised to personally cover any excess damages Horizon couldn’t handle.
Only then did the board give in.
Norris had been so smug back then. He thought it was all thanks to his daughter. He thought Alfred was backing their family like that because of her.
But now…
That smug satisfaction had turned into a guillotine, hanging over their necks.
And it was about to drop. “It’s over. We’re done.”
Norris slumped down, his phone slipping right out of his hand and crashing onto the floor.
Zoey saw the dead look on his face and panicked.

She grabbed the phone, opened the contracts, and scanned them fast. Her face turned just as pale.
One million.
One million.
It wasn’t even enough to buy her a handbag.
Right now, Horizon Industries had multiple major projects in play. Some were just getting started. Some were already near completion.
Some hadn’t even launched yet, but they had already invested heavily in planning and prep work.
Now, with Keywood Group pulling the plug, the entire company was free-falling toward bankruptcy.
“Zoey.”
Norris suddenly turned to his daughter, eyes blazing.
“Zoey, we have no one else. This time, it’s all on you. I don’t care what you have to do. Just make sure Alfred backs off. After this, we’ll never bother him again.”
“No way!”
Zoey shot up, shouting, “How could I not go see Alfred?”
Norris’s face darkened instantly.
“You still don’t get it, do you? Alfred doesn’t even like you. You keep chasing after him and all you’re doing is making him hate you more. What do you want? To end up begging on the street?”
His rage twisted his whole face.
He should’ve never married that idiot Eileen. And he definitely shouldn’t have let her give birth to this useless mess.
But it was too late for regrets now.
“I’m telling you right now. Either you go beg Alfred to spare us, or you get the hell out of this house. If you’re not useful to this family, everything will go to your brother.”
Zoey stared at her father, horrified, but didn’t dare argue anymore. She nodded, reluctantly.

“Okay, Dad. I’ll go see Alfred right now.”
Then she grabbed her purse and stormed out of the Macks’ mansion.
But this time, Zoey wasn’t getting anything.
Norris waited at home, pacing restlessly for hours. No call. No message. No news.
