“The school didn’t want to risk offending the Macks over some scholarship kid. And they sure as hell didn’t want that kid’s death to tarnish their reputation either. So they just buried the whole thing.”
After finishing, Sergio looked conflicted.
Truth was, what Zoey did should’ve been impossible to hide.
If Alfred had looked into it back then, it would’ve taken him five minutes to find out the truth.
But he trusted her. Just like that.
The great leader of Keywood Group got played like a fool by a nobody from the Macks for over
ten years.
Now, even his marriage was about to go up in smoke.
Sergio didn’t know whether to feel bad for the man or just laugh at him.
“Mr. Keywood, I think that girl’s death might be connected to what Zoey told you about saving your life. Once we find her mother, we’ll probably get to the bottom of what really happened that year.”
There was no way in hell he believed a woman who could stand by and watch Nella die in an avalanche without blinking had actually risked her life to pull two strangers from a burning car.
“Keep digging. I don’t care what it takes. I want the truth.”
“Yes, Mr. Keywood.”
After Sergio left, Alfred lowered his gaze to the phone in his hand. It was still on the chat with Nella.
He typed, deleted, retyped, then finally hit send.
“Want to grab lunch with me?”
Just like he expected, the message sat there for hours with no reply.
It was close to finals. Even though Nella was only covering a few courses, her teaching load was light.
She had one class that morning, then her schedule opened up.

Back in her office, Marshal was still happily chasing his ball.
The second she walked in, he lit up and wagged his tail like crazy.
Soon after, someone knocked on the open
door.
Wesley stood there holding a stack of books.
The sunlight behind him spilled in and framed his body like a halo.
“Hello, Professor Keywood.”
He smiled as he walked in. “Mind if I take over a corner of this place?”
Nella looked at him, confused. “Don’t you have your own office?”
Unlike her, Wesley was a visiting associate professor from Apex Medical School.
He already had a private office assigned to him.
He dropped the books onto the desk and let out a sigh.
“It’s too quiet being alone in there.”
Then his
eyes
settled slowly on Nella.
“You don’t mind having me around, do you, Dr. Milo?”
Nella didn’t really care either way.

This office was technically shared by three instructors, but the space was huge. Adding Wesley didn’t make much difference.
Besides, the other two instructors were
their time in the labs or the team offusy running their research projects and usually spent
not here.
“If you’d like to join us, Professor Keywood, we’d be glad to have you.”
Around noon, another knock came from the door.
“Professor?”
The moment she saw who it was, Nella’s face lit
up
with surprise.
The
person stepped inside slowly.
Nella stood up and gave him her seat.

“Professor, what brings you here?”
“Just wanted to check in on my student and see how she’s settling in.”
Caleb smiled as his eyes shifted to Wesley.
Nella was just about to say she was doing fine when Wesley greeted him with a smile. “Professor, it’s been a while.”
