Chapter 329 A File

Someone rapped on the office door.

Alfred turned around and saw Sergio walking in with a document envelope in hand.

“Mr. Keywood, there’s been some progress on that thing you asked us to look into from over a decade ago.”

“Go on.”

Alfred barely looked up.

“Well, the incident from back then happened in a pretty remote area. There weren’t any cameras around. We’re still tracking down people who lived nearby and might’ve seen something.”

Alfred’s brows pulled together, irritation creeping into his voice.

“So basically, you still haven’t found anything?”

Sergio didn’t say a word.

He pushed up his glasses and said, “But our guys started with the Macks and uncovered something from ten years ago.

“Zoey was attending a private boarding prep school back then. There was a case where a low- income student, admitted through a special scholarship program, jumped off a building. The school buried the incident pretty quickly, but we found out that just a few days later, Zoey left the country.”

Alfred already knew about that part.

Back then, Zoey had come crying to him, telling him that she’d inhaled too much toxic smoke while saving him and her lungs were damaged. She said the environment in the nation wasn’t great for her recovery and her parents wanted to send her overseas to recuperate.

He’d handed her a huge sum of money for that.

He even hired people to search globally for the best pulmonary specialists to treat her.

The doctors he spoke to all said the same thing-her condition needed a clean environment and medication to stabilize.

During that time, Zoey would send him updates too. She’d always complain about how she envied people who could chase their dreams, while just dancing left her coughing up a lung.

Said she got depression from all the stress and hopelessness.

That was when he really started feeling like he owed her. Every time she ended up in the hospital for a suicide attempt, that guilt would crush him.

He believed everything Zoey said. The only thing he never considered was that everyone around her might’ve been in on it.

He’d believed she was repaying him for saving her life, so for two whole years, he pushed the Macks’ company into one of the top circles in Apex.

If the Macks really had paid off those specialists, it wouldn’t have been impossible.

That thought lingered in Alfred’s mind when Sergio’s voice broke the silence again.

“I don’t think Zoey ever went overseas to recover.”

As he spoke, Sergio handed him a file.

Alfred took it and flipped through.

Inside was a full report on Zoey’s lifestyle abroad.

Smoking. Clubbing. Jet-setting across the globe for vacations.

All that time he thought she was getting world-class treatment, she’d actually been living it up without a care in the world.

“Mr. Keywood, we also found out that the student who died lived near where your car accident happened. After her death, her mother disappeared too. We’re still looking into that.”

“What did the school say?”

Alfred’s face was stone-cold.

The school knew better than to lie about something he wanted investigated.

“That student was in the same class as Zoey. She was bullied by Zoey and her little entourage, but… the Macks had a lot of influence back then, and you know how that goes.”

Sergio paused, glanced at Alfred, and swallowed the rest of his sentence.

But Alfred understood.

He knew exactly who was backing the Macks. The Keywoods.
