“Come on, even if someone saves your life, it’s on you to pay that back. What’s it got to do with your spouse? Don’t you think so, Mr. Keywood?”

As soon as Wesley said that, Alfred’s face sank even deeper.

He made it sound like he was standing up for him, but Alfred caught the dig instantly.

Every word hit like a slap, like a twisted reminder that he hadn’t done enough for Zoey and still dragged his wife into the mess.

Alfred stayed rooted in place, completely still.

His hands clenched tighter at his sides. His knuckles started to burn.

Nella had no interest in listening to any more of it. She didn’t want things to blow them again, either. She turned to Wesley and said, “Let’s go. You’ve got class later.”

“Yeah.”

Wesley nodded. His lips were still curled in that smug little grin.

“I’ll get going then, Mr. Keywood. Hopefully next time I see you, I’ll be able to call you the ex.”

Nella didn’t really get what he meant by that. But Alfred did.

Whether it was some primal instinct or just that classic male possessiveness, he understood the message loud and clear.

That word was full of bite.

It lit a spark behind Alfred’s

eyes.

Wesley had barely taken a step with Nella when Alfred stopped pretending he cared and grabbed her wrist before she could walk away.

“We need to talk. Before the divorce gets finalized, we need to actually sit down and sort this out.”

Nella frowned. “Didn’t we already do that?”

“No.”

Alfred stared at her with something stubborn and strange in his expression. “You can’t just throw the whole thing away without even giving me the chance to explain, babe.”

Wesley jumped in right then.

“Actions matter more than intentions, Mr. Keywood. No matter what you meant, what you did to her was real.”

“Shut the hell up!”

Alfred shot him a glare sharp enough to cut glass. “Even if we’re completely done emotionally, she’s still my wife. You’re just a nobody. This has nothing to do with you.”

Then he gave a cold smirk that didn’t reach his eyes. “Don’t test me, Wesley. You really won’t like how I react.”

Wesley clearly heard the threat.

But he barely blinked. He just let out a short, dismissive breath, like a laugh without the effort. “You really think I’m scared of you, Mr. Keywood?”

Alfred’s eyes narrowed. That pressure in the air got heavier fast. The threat in his gaze started to crawl out like a slow leak.

“You want to see for yourself?”

Wesley started to answer, but Nella cut him off. “Wesley.”

The second her voice hit, his whole expression changed. The tension in his face softened, and his

eyes filled with something warm.

“You should head out. I’ll handle this.”

Wesley clearly didn’t like it, but he nodded anyway. “Alright. If anything happens, call me.”

Once Wesley left, Nella turned to Alfred.

“Wesley’s my colleague. He literally saved my life. You don’t need to twist what we have into something dirty.”

Alfred stared at her cold expression. Then he let out a bitter, dry laugh.

“You really believe the way he looks at you is all that innocent?”

That hit a nerve. Her eyes narrowed, and the anger started to show.

“Alfred, don’t you dare drag him through the mud like that.”
