Chapter 35 An Unspoken Shift

Alfred froze for a moment. Perhaps he remembered how many times he had broken plans because of Zoey. He fell silent at once.

He coughed awkwardly and said, “I brought Zoey home and came straight to find you. I … I never planned to change my mind.”

It sounded like he was explaining himself.

Knowing he was in the wrong, the confidence in his earlier questioning faded.

Nella nodded and had no interest in pressing the topic any further. 1

She only wanted to get through the next two months in an orderly way.

Still, Alfred felt strange to her today.

In the past, when he stood her up, he never bothered to explain even a single word.

Yet today, he was explaining. More than once.

Nella pressed her dry lips together and said,

“Sorry for taking up your time, but I’ve already eaten dinner. You should go eat on your own.”

She was trying to send him away.

After the counseling session with Lyra that afternoon, her resistance toward Alfred had eased a little.

But after being around him for a while, the irritation came back.

Alfred seemed to hear it in her tone. He paused, a flicker of surprise crossing his eyes.

He stared at Nella for a long moment before speaking.

“Come with me.”

Just three words, firm and heavy. The kind of pressure that came from long-standing authority. Nella frowned slightly.

She rubbed her temples, forcing down the rising irritation, and pointed at the wall clock.

“I’m on night duty. I can’t leave my post. Patients can have issues at any time.”

Every word she said was reasonable. But being turned down again and again, Alfred finally failed to hold back his anger.

“Then I won’t bother you,” he said coldly.

He turned and walked out, slamming the door shut.

The heavy sound made Nella’s chest tighten.

She closed her eyes, took a moment to steady herself, then let out a long breath.

She did not understand why Alfred was acting so strangely today. Why was he so stuck on one dinner.

Since she could not make sense of it, she chose not to dwell on such a meaningless question.

Alfred left Nella’s office with a dark expression.

Her distant, impatient look replayed in his mind, making his chest feel blocked and tight.

It was uncomfortable, suffocating, and mixed with a trace of unease he did not even notice himself.

Just as he walked out of the surgery building, his phone rang.

He stopped, thinking it must be Nella calling to apologize.

The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. The heaviness in his chest eased a bit.

He took out his phone. The next second, before the smile could fully form, it faded.

His brows knit together, but he still answered the call. “Hello, Zoey?”

“Alfred my brother… Something happened to Patrick. He was in a car accident. He’s been taken to … taken to the hospital. Alfred, I’m so scared. My parents aren’t here. What should I do…”

Zoey’s voice came through the phone, shaking with panic and fear.

“Patrick was in a car accident?” Alfred frowned deeply as he walked toward the parking lot, speaking gently to calm her down.
