Chapter 37 Doubt at the Operating Room

Nella’s tone was firm and decisive, nothing like the gentle, soft-spoken Nella Alfred was used to.

Nella did not know what Alfred was thinking. She calmly pulled her hand free from his grip and hurried toward the operating room.

Alfred froze for half a second, then quickly followed.

The emergency surgery doors closed soon after.

He only caught a brief glimpse of Nella changing into sterile scrubs. Her bare face was calm and unreadable. Before he could look any longer, the doors shut.

“Alfred.”

Zoey’s choked voice rang out. The next moment, she rushed into his arms.

“Alfred, I’m so scared. If something happens to Patrick, what am I supposed to do?”

Alfred stiffened when she hugged him.

The first image that flashed through his mind was Nella’s distant face. Almost without thinking, he pushed Zoey away.

“Don’t worry. Nella is inside treating Patrick. He’ll be fine.”

Nella…

Zoey’s crying stopped at once.

This was the first time she had heard Alfred call Nella by her name so naturally.

Zoey’s gaze dimmed slightly. A sharp sense of unease rose in her chest.

“Alfred, I’m scared.”

She stayed close to him, hesitating as if she wanted to say more.

Alfred shifted his eyes from the operating room doors to her face. “Relax. Patrick will be okay.”

Zoey bit her lower lip, clearly holding something back.

“What are you worried about?” Alfred asked, rubbing his temples. A trace of hidden impatience crept into his voice.

Zoey did not notice. She clutched his sleeve, her voice shaking.

“I heard the ER doctors say Patrick’s condition is very serious. He could be in danger at any moment. Nella is still so young. She’s only been a doctor for two years. Can she really save him?”

She tightened her grip. “Should we ask a senior director to take over? Just to be safe.”

For some reason, hearing Zoey question Nella like this made anger flare in Alfred’s chest.

Her fingers clenched so tightly they turned pale. Still unwilling to give up, she said softly, “Even if Nella’s skills are fine, I’m afraid … afraid she’s still upset with you about Glacieroth. You left her there alone for half a month because of me. What if she takes it out on Patrick and does it

on purpose…”

“Zoey.”

Alfred cut her off coldly.

Zoey looked up in shock and met his sharp gaze. Her heart skipped.

“She’s not that kind of person.”

Alfred’s voice had turned noticeably colder.

And in that moment, Zoey clearly heard the anger beneath his words.
