Chapter 391 First in Line
Nella didn’t know whether to be exasperated or charmed by the students’ antics.
“All right, enough with the sneaky tactics. You might scare off your Professor Keywood.”
“Scare him off? Professor Keywood would love to use his charms on you! Isn’t that right, Professor Keywood?”
The student jerked his chin in Wesley’s direction.
Wesley looked amused, his gaze soft and warm as it landed on Nella.
“I’d love to turn on the charm on Dr. Milo. I’m just not sure if she’d fall for it.”
Nella instinctively looked up at him, and her eyes met the undisguised affection in his.
She froze, a flicker of surprise and confusion passing through her expression.
The next moment, she casually looked away.
As if trying to brush off the awkwardness, she laughed.
“Do I look like the kind of person who’s easily swayed by a charming face? Now get back to work, all of you.”
She didn’t look at Wesley again and instead directed her own students to focus on the project at hand.
But inside, Nella’s heart was racing.
Before, she had never considered the possibility that Wesley might have feelings for her. But the look in his eyes just now was impossible to ignore, no matter how hard she tried.
She had loved someone deeply once. She knew what it looked like when someone gazed at the person they
adored.
The way Wesley looked at her was exactly how she used to look at Alfred.
The realization left her flustered and unsure of how to react.
To her, Wesley was a good friend, a lifesaver, and a fellow mentee of Caleb-nothing more.
So when she saw the affection in his eyes, she panicked.
For the rest of the project meeting, her mind was elsewhere.
She didn’t even notice when the discussion ended or when the students filed out of the lab.
“Everyone’s gone.”
Wesley’s voice came from behind her, laced with amusement and a hint of teasing. It startled her.
She spun around to find Wesley leaning toward her, a soft smile on his face.
Up close now, the look in his eyes was completely unguarded.
Nella turned her face away, but Wesley gently took her chin and guided it back.

Nella tried to shift backward, but the large conference table was right behind her, pressing against her waist and leaving her nowhere to go.
“You figured it out, didn’t you?”
Wesley asked, getting straight to the point. His tone was gentle, but the intensity of his feelings was almost overwhelming.
“Now that the kids are gone, how about you give me a real answer this time? Any chance my charm offensive might actually work?”
Nella hadn’t expected him to be so direct. She couldn’t dodge even if she wanted to.
“Wesley.”
Nella pressed her lips together, trying to find the right words to be honest without hurting him.
“I just got divorced. I’m not … I’m not ready to think about dating right now.”
“Got it.”
Wesley nodded, his composure unshaken.
“Then, when you are ready, can I be first in line?”
His smiling eyes held a quiet, lingering glimmer of hope.
