Chapter 45 A Small Life Found

Unfortunately, he saw nothing at all.

What met his gaze was Nella’s detached, distant expression.

The eyes that once shone like stars when she smiled were now a deep, unsettling calm.

Within them, only a faint trace of resistance lingered.

Alfred’s fingers tightened unconsciously around the armrest of the swivel chair, the knuckles standing out starkly pale.

They stared at one another for what felt like an eternity before Alfred finally broke the silence, his gaze dropping away.

The hands that had pinned her in place withdrew as well.

He straightened, standing tall as he looked down at the woman seated before him, and spoke slowly.

“Is it really just lack of sleep?”

His voice, when it came, was noticeably hoarse.

Nella’s body stiffened for a split second. Then she nodded. “What else could it be?”

Alfred stared at her face for another moment in silence before looking away, his tone low and heavy.

“Then get some proper rest. I won’t disturb you.”

“Hm.”

Nella acknowledged him with a faint sound, watching as he turned to leave.

Alfred walked toward the door. As he opened it, his eyes flicked once more toward the collection of medicine boxes on the table.

Before he could see them clearly, Nella casually busied herself with tidying up, slipping the boxes into a drawer with practiced ease.

“Take care.”

Alfred glanced back at Nella one last time.

The chill in her tone made him frown almost imperceptibly. After a deep, searching look, he opened the door and was gone.

Only after Alfred had left did Nella finally let out a long, shaky breath, sinking back into the chair and closing her eyes in exhaustion.

Fortunately, after the emergency involving Patrick earlier, the rest of her shift passed without further calls.

She wasn’t sure whether Lyra’s medication had taken effect or whether it was simply because she’d been on her feet for nearly six straight hours, but she slept deeply, rarely and mercifully free of nightmares.

Because she’d worked a full overnight shift, Nella had the next day off.

After handing over her duties to a colleague, she left the hospital.

She headed straight toward the subway entrance, but as she passed a trash bin nearby, she heard faint, whimpering cries coming from inside.

The sound was weak, tugging strangely at her heart.

Without thinking, Nella moved closer.

With one glance, she spotted a small, pale golden puppy struggling to climb out of a bin overflowing with filth.

It emitted feeble, desperate whimpers, a silent plea to the passing crowds.

But that fierce, determined will to survive reminded Nella vividly of herself, trapped under the snow, helpless and pleading.

It was winter in Apex. The cold wind cut to the bone.

Nella hesitated no longer. She took off the scarf around her neck and carefully lifted the puppy from the bin.

Wrapped in the soft fabric, still holding the warmth from her body, the puppy seemed to relax slightly, its cries softening.

Not wasting a moment, she cradled the puppy close and hurried toward the nearest veterinary clinic.

After a brief examination, the vet looked at Nella.

“It’s a golden retriever puppy. Just opened its eyes, probably around two weeks old. It caught a chill, but it doesn’t look too serious. We’ll know more once the blood test results are back.”

Half an hour later, the results came back.

“The test for distemper is positive. He’ll need to be hospitalized.”
