Nella didn’t hesitate. She paid the bill, completed the puppy’s admission paperwork, and only then left the veterinary clinic.

Stepping outside, her thoughts kept drifting back to the little creature. She just couldn’t shake her worry for it.

Back when she had just married Alfred, she’d once found an abandoned puppy in their neighborhood.

She had wanted to adopt it. But Alfred had frowned, his rejection obvious.

He had told her he disliked the idea of animal hair and smells in their home.

She’d been disappointed, but in the end, she’d had no choice but to find the little stray a foster family.

On one hand, their house had been purchased by Alfred. She couldn’t, in good conscience, bring a dog home without his agreement.

On the other hand, the woman she’d been back then had placed everything related to Alfred above all else. Since he didn’t like it, she naturally gave it

Now, fate had brought this new puppy into her path.

And then she remembered that she and Alfred were getting divorced soon anyway.

It was perfect. While the puppy was in treatment, she could look for a place to rent. By the time the little one was discharged, she could bring it home to live with her.

The thought lifted her spirits, a quiet happiness spreading through her chest.

In the ICU ward of the surgical building, Alfred listened to the doctor explain Patrick’s condition, but his attention was elsewhere.

“The patient’s condition has stabilized for now. If there are no complications, he’ll be transferred to a general ward tomorrow morning.

“Also, since this was an aortic dissection surgery, post-operative care is critical to avoid threatening complications.

“These are the key points for follow-up care. Please review them and sign here.”

Alfred responded with a low hum. After signing, he asked-seemingly offhand, “Where is

Nella?”

The doctor across from him paused, then replied, “Dr. Milo handles surgical procedures. ICU monitoring falls under our ICU department’s responsibility. If you have further questions regarding the surgery itself, you could consult at her office.”

He glanced at his watch and added, “However, Dr. Milo worked an overnight shift last night and is off today. She handed over early this morning, so she’s probably home by now.”

Having said that, the doctor was called away by a nurse who came looking for him.

Alfred remained where he was, his expression darkening.

He had deliberately left home late this morning, waiting, but Nella never came back.

Using Patrick as an excuse, he’d come to the hospital looking for her, only to be received by an ICU doctor instead.

From start to finish, Nella had never appeared.

He had assumed she was still busy at the hospital. Yet now he was being told she’d clocked out early that morning?

Alfred’s lips pressed into a thin line, an unconscious chill settling around him.

“Alfred, since ICU care isn’t Nella’s responsibility, we shouldn’t trouble her.”

Zoey spoke up, having grown uneasy the moment he asked about Nella.

The old fear of him being snatched away by Nella at any moment had resurfaced.

She was afraid that despite all her efforts, Alfred’s heart might still find its way back to Nella.
