Chapter 51 Muted Notifications
Nella opened the chat and replied, “I did. I booked an appointment with a specialist, and they prescribed medication. It’s working really well. I didn’t have any nightmares last night.”
No sooner had she sent it than Wesley replied again.
“That’s good news.”
“Make sure you rest more and don’t push yourself too hard.”
“You still need to see the therapist regularly. You have to treat it properly.”
“And no matter what happens, don’t let yourself suffer.”
Nella had noticed before that Wesley had a habit of breaking one thought into several short messages, sending them one after another, fast enough that her phone kept buzzing nonstop.
Alfred glanced sideways at her and saw that, just like yesterday morning, she was holding her phone and typing intently to the other person, not even sparing him a glance.
It was as if he were nothing more than her driver.
“Nella.”
Alfred finally lost his patience and called her name.
Nella lifted her head from her phone at last and met his displeased gaze.
“Who is this person? Why do they talk so much?”
Nella looked apologetic. She pressed her lips together slightly and said, “A friend. They needed me for something. Was I bothering you?”
Before Alfred could answer, she pointed to a spot ahead where a car could pull over.
“Drop me off there. Send me the restaurant address, and I’ll take a cab over myself.”
Alfred’s expression darkened visibly.
Seeing that, Nella thought for a moment and added, “Actually, if you want to ask about Patrick, you can do that when we get home. There’s no need to book a restaurant just for that. I can ask my colleagues in the ICU to send me his data later. I-”
“I’m hungry. We’ll talk after dinner.”

Alfred cut her off, his face grim.

Seeing this, Nella didn’t insist further, nor did she pay attention to whether Alfred was angry or
not.
She simply turned off the notification sounds and continued chatting with Wesley.
Wesley kept sending messages the same way-one sentence split into several parts.
Even with notifications muted, the soft, muted vibration of incoming messages could still be heard while the chat screen was open.
To Alfred, each one sounded like a provocation, more than once making him want to swear under his breath.
The hand gripping the steering wheel tightened unconsciously, the veins on the back of his hand starting to bulge.
“We’ve been married this long. How come I never knew you had a friend who talks this much?”
Nella’s fingers paused for a moment. Then she replied casually, “Everyone has their own social circle. It’s not necessary for spouses to know every single friend the other has.”
That one simple sentence drew a clear line between them.
There was nothing obviously wrong with what Nella said, yet it left Alfred feeling inexplicably uncomfortable.
He took a long look at her, said nothing in the end, and pressed down on the accelerator, driving toward the restaurant he had booked.
Belcour was famous worldwide for its romantic atmosphere, and this Belcour restaurant was no exception.
The moment she walked in, Nella was wrapped in the city’s signature romantic décor.
It was the kind of place perfect for couples and married pairs.
In the past, if Alfred had brought her here on his own initiative, she would have been delighted and happy for days afterward.
But now, watching the Belcour waiter in a tailcoat speak fluently with Alfred, Nella stood off to the side, detached and uninterested, feeling nothing at all.
