Chapter 56 The Ringtone

:

Alfred no longer even felt like opening WhatsApp.

He set his phone down roughly, as if venting his frustration.

“Guess you really put your heart into it,” he said, tugging at the corner of his mouth with a trace of mockery in his tone.

Nella didn’t mind at all and nodded along.

“Yeah. That’s what doctors are supposed to do. No matter what, Patrick was a patient I saved. I owe his family a detailed explanation.”

Her words made Alfred’s breathing hitch hard.

Damn it.

When had Nella become so infuriating to talk to?

As if determined to win this argument, he snapped back through clenched teeth, “I already told you, I’m not Patrick’s family.”

Isn’t that only a matter of time?

A brother counts as family too.

Nella nodded perfunctorily. “Sure. In the end, it’s the same.”

“Nella!”

Alfred finally lost his temper, his voice rising several notches.

The violinist in the room, fully immersed in the music, was startled into playing a wrong note.

Meanwhile, Nella picked up her bag and stood up, completely unfazed by the anger in Alfred’s voice.

She turned her gaze toward the window.

Outside, a mass of dark clouds was rolling in, heavy and oppressive.

A few muffled claps of thunder followed.

“It’s about to rain. We should head back early. If it pours, getting stuck in traffic will be a pain,” she said calmly.

Looking at her face, so devoid of emotion, Alfred suddenly felt a deep sense of futility, like getting angry in front of someone who couldn’t even see it.

Even though his chest felt tight and uncomfortable, he still let out a low “Mm” and called someone over to settle the bill.

When they pushed open the restaurant doors, a blast of cold air hit them head-on, making Nella shiver instinctively.

Alfred noticed.

He casually took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders.

The warmth from his body wrapped around her instantly.

Nella froze for a second and was just about to say she didn’t need it when the phone in the coat pocket suddenly rang.

“Alfred, your phone’s ringing. Zoey’s calling.”

It was Zoey’s voice.

He had actually recorded it as his ringtone.

Nella raised an eyebrow.

Alfred had always come across as cool, serious, and rigid. This was the first time she’d realized he could be playful like this.

Then again, considering it was Zoey, it wasn’t surprising at all.

Hearing the ringtone, Alfred froze for a moment.

Then panic flashed through his eyes, and he instinctively looked at Nella.

She stood there with an unchanged expression. Seeing him hesitate, she even reminded him, “Aren’t you going to answer? Maybe Ms. Mack has something urgent.”

She pointed toward the taxi stand ahead. “Go ahead. I’ll just take a cab home.”

As she spoke, she started to take off the coat draped over her shoulders, but Alfred grabbed her

wrist.

“It’s going to rain hard. I’ll take you home,” he said urgently.

At the same time, he picked up his phone and answered the call.

“Alfred! There’s thunder and lightning. I’m so scared. What do I do? I-I’m really scared! Alfred, help me!”

Zoey’s voice was sharp and frantic, as if she had been badly shaken.

Nella glanced at Alfred’s face.
