Nella casually slipped it into the bag beside her.

Throughout the meal, Alfred kept trying to find topics to ease the unspoken distance between them.
Nella responded half-heartedly, answering when she felt like it.
Alfred had never been good at making conversation to begin with, and before long, they fell back into silence.
“Last night, when you were operating on Patrick, I was watching from the observation room,” Alfred said, trying again.
Nella paused mid-bite.
Her first reaction was that Alfred didn’t trust her skills and had been keeping an eye on her.
With that thought, she asked casually, “What, Mr. Keywood? Were you worried I’d mess up the surgery?”
Her tone was light, more like a joke.
But the faint trace of mockery in her expression made Alfred panic.
“No, no. That’s not it. I trust you,” he said quickly.
His words came out faster than usual, as if he were afraid she might misunderstand.
Nella curved her lips into a small smile. “I’m kidding.”
Even so, Alfred hurried to explain, “I was just curious what you’re like at work. I wanted to see for myself.”
As he spoke, something unusual flickered in his eyes as he looked at her.
Hearing that, Nella frowned slightly in confusion, then tugged at the corner of her mouth.
“Mr. Keywood, that’s kind of a strange interest.”
Looking at Alfred, a phrase suddenly came to her mind-love and irritation born from the
same source.
In the past, if Alfred had taken the initiative to show interest in her work, she would have been overjoyed.

But now,
him doing the exact same thing only annoyed her. It even felt like he was making trouble for no reason.
She couldn’t even be bothered to pretend anymore.
Yet Alfred either didn’t catch on to her indifference or was simply desperate for something to say. After hearing her comment, he said earnestly, “I wouldn’t call it an interest. You’re my wife. It’s only right that I pay attention to your work.”
You’re my wife. Nella had heard that phrase twice already during this one dinner, and it was starting to grate on her.
She didn’t know why Alfred suddenly kept leaning on their marriage to sound close to her, but it definitely wasn’t because of affection.
Unwilling to continue the topic, she chose not to respond and simply focused on finishing her meal.
At last, the tasteless dinner came to an end.
Nella picked up the warm towel set beside her and wiped the corner of her mouth. At that moment, her phone lit up.
It was a message from a colleague at the hospital, sending over Patrick’s vital signs monitoring data.
She opened her chat with Alfred and forwarded the file to him on WhatsApp.
When Alfred heard his phone chime, he casually glanced at the screen and saw Nella’s name
pop up.
His eyes brightened without him realizing it.
“Is there something you can’t just say in person…” Alfred said, the slight upward curve of his lips held in check as he spoke, then stopped halfway.
He saw that the message was a PDF file titled “Patrick Mack.”
“This is the analysis of Patrick’s current condition that my colleagues in the ICU sent me. He’s relatively stable right now. As long as the follow-up care is done properly, it won’t have much impact on his future life,” Nella said.
The faint smile that had just appeared at the corner of Alfred’s mouth faded away again.
