But now, the bloodshot stubbornness in Alfred’s eyes left Nella confused and surprised.
“Nella, we’re still married, Alfred reminded her firmly.
The red in his eyes seemed even deeper now.
The look on his face was as if she’d betrayed him.
If this marriage weren’t bound by a contract, seeing him like this might’ve actually made Nella doubt herself.
But now, looking at Alfred and thinking about the less than two months left…
“Okay. I got it.”
She nodded and agreed.
Yet she realized that without the lingering affection she once had for him, she simply couldn’t bring herself to call him “Alfred” the way she used to.
Alfred’s expression eased slightly.
Still, the patchouli scent clinging to her kept needling his nerves.
He rubbed his temples and forced down the anger threatening to surface, along with the unease mixed in with it.
“Then say my name. Let me hear it.”
Impatience slowly surfaced in Nella’s eyes. Not wanting to dance around it, she asked him directly, “Do you not like me?”
Alfred was caught off guard by how blunt she was.
He asked reflexively, “What?”
“If you don’t like me, you can just say it. You don’t need to pick fights like this,” Nella continued.
This time, Alfred understood her perfectly.
He stared at her in silence for a long moment with that dark gaze, then suddenly laughed.
“Asking you to call my name is picking a fight?”

She didn’t want to argue over something so insignificant, so she forced down the irritation bubbling up and said, “I just think it’s awkward to call your name like this.”
She pressed her temples, looking a little tired.
Trying to appear softer in front of him, she looked at Alfred and said, “I got rained on, and I’m uncomfortable. Can I go shower first?”
Even though it still felt like a stone was lodged in his chest, Alfred finally let go of her arm.
He shifted aside slightly, making room for her to pass.
Nella walked around him and headed straight for the guest bedroom she used.
She grabbed a robe and went into the bathroom, taking a hot shower.
Wrapped in the robe, she stepped out while drying her hair, only to be startled by the man sitting on the guest bedroom couch, flipping through a medical journal.
Her hand froze mid-motion.
“Why are you in here?”
Alfred casually set the magazine down. “You didn’t lock the door.”
Nella froze.
“I mean, did you come into my room for something?”
Alfred leaned back against the couch, his gaze resting quietly on her body wrapped in the robe.
The robe was loose, the neckline hanging low. The faint glimpse of skin beneath it added an unspoken intimacy to the quiet room.
Alfred’s pupils tightened, his gaze deepening.
Nella suddenly realized what he was looking at and quickly pulled the robe closed.
But at that moment, Alfred stood up from the couch and strode toward her.
Nella wasn’t short.
At five-seven, she was fairly tall, yet standing in front of the six-three Alfred, she felt an oppressive pressure that made it hard to breathe.
