But Alfred couldn’t focus on that. All he felt was an emptiness in his chest, like cold wind rushing through it.

It made him feel chilled and sore.

Nella hadn’t called him once to ask if the fever broke, if he took the pills, or if he felt any better.

She hadn’t even sent a single punctuation mark.

The ridiculous part was that he’d been clutching his phone like an idiot, not knowing what he was even waiting for.

When have I ever spent my time waiting for a meaningless text checking up on me?

The more he thought about it, the more absurd it felt. Yet the cold wind pouring into his chest only made the ache swell deeper.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

His

eyes lit up instantly, and the ache in his chest eased at once.

He didn’t even realize his steps quickened as he went to open the door, or that the corners of his lips had unconsciously lifted.

“Did you forget the door code?”

He opened the door, his tone light.

Then froze when he saw who was standing there.

“Zoey? Why are you here?”

Alfred’s mood sank sharply.

The smile that had just appeared vanished at once.

The next second, Zoey burst into tears and threw herself into his arms.

Alfred stiffened and immediately pushed her away.

That reflexive move made Zoey’s expression freeze.

In the past, Alfred wouldn’t have allowed overly intimate behavior, but he’d never pushed her away so urgently.

She even caught the flash of panic in his eyes.

Like he was afraid someone might see them and misunderstand.

Zoey stared at Alfred, biting her lower lip until it turned pale.

“Zoey, do you need something?” Alfred asked, turning and sitting back down on the couch.

Zoey suppressed the hatred in her chest and let tears fall as she faced him.

“Alfred, Nella’s got me all wrong. I didn’t know what else to do, so I could only come to you.”

At the mention of Nella, Alfred’s attention snapped over at once.

“What happened?” he asked hoarsely.

Zoey sniffed, her voice still choked with tears.

“This morning, I went to the hospital to see Patrick and ran into her. In a crowded public area, she called me a mistress and said I was destroying your family.”

As Zoey spoke, tears streamed down her face as she looked wounded.

“The people around heard it. Without knowing anything, they joined her in scolding me, using horrible words to humiliate me.”

She cried as she spoke, carefully stealing glances at Alfred’s expression.

Seeing his face darken just as she expected, Zoey felt even more pleased inside.

She continued her sobbing complaint.

“I know Nella misunderstands me. Maybe I rely on you too much, and that made her unhappy. But I really didn’t mean it. I never once thought about being a mistress or ruining your marriage.”

She walked over and crouched beside Alfred.

Her hand rested on his thigh, but he instinctively avoided it.
