When Thomas turned his attention back to Nolan, he noticed his former student seemed distracted, his thoughts clearly elsewhere.
Sensing his preoccupation, Thomas smiled knowingly. “The person you’re thinking about is right here beside you. What else could possibly be on your mind?”
Nolan was quiet for a long moment. Then he slowly turned his head to look at Scarlett.
Feeling his gaze, Scarlett gently lowered her eyes.
Thomas‘ eyes moved between the two of them before he asked Scarlett, his tone deliberately light yet meaningful, “So, Scarlett, what are your thoughts on Nolan?”
Scarlett looked up at Thomas. After a brief silence, she answered, “Nolan is… exceptional.”
Hearing this, Thomas replied in a tone that was half–joking, “If he’s so exceptional, then should go for it. Don’t wait until someone else snatches him up.”

Scarlett understood Thomas was playfully trying to nudge them together, but she felt a flush of awkwardness. “Mr. Newman, I actually…” she began.
She wanted to say she was already married, but before she could form the words, Nolan cut in smoothly.
“Mr. Newman,” he said, rising from his seat, “it’s getting late. I should take Scarlett home. Next time, I’ll treat you to a proper meal.”
Thomas saw the quiet plea and worry in Nolan’s eyes. He sighed, a mixture of fondness and resignation. “You stubborn kid.”
Nolan stood, then picked up his own coat and carefully draped it over Scarlett’s shoulders.
The two of them walked side–by–side out of the barbecue spot. Thomas watched them leave, thinking they looked good together, yet wondering if fate would ever allow it.
Once they were a good distance down the sidewalk, Scarlett spoke tentatively into the cool evening air, “Nolan, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Nolan halted. Scarlett noticed his frame seemed to tense momentarily.
Then he turned to face her. Without a word, he suddenly closed the distance between them and pulled her into a tight embrace.
He held her, resting his chin gently on top of her head.

His voice, when it came, was thick with a quiet, pleading ache. “Don’t. Please don’t say it.”
He could guess what she was going to say, and he couldn’t bear to hear it.
He’d spent years regretting why he hadn’t been more decisive back then, why he’d never found the courage to tell her how he felt.
He’d waited, focused on building his career, and by the time he felt he had something to offer, she was already someone else’s wife.
And now, he envied Damian with a fierce, bitter jealousy–envied how openly, how recklessly Damian could proclaim his feelings.
Scarlett’s heart ached for him, but she knew she had to be clear. “Nolan, some things… need to
be said.”
He only held her tighter. She thought she felt a tremor run through him. “Just… do this one thing for me,” he whispered, the words muffled against her hair.
A profound sadness washed over Scarlett, and she fell silent.
Feeling her acquiescence, Nolan murmured, “Just let me hold onto a little bit of hope.”
“What if there isn’t any hope left?” Scarlett asked, her own voice rough with emotion.
“But what if there is?” he countered softly.
Scarlett opened her mouth to say more, but Nolan gently released her. He looked down at her, his expression vulnerable in the dim streetlight. “Let me take you home,” he said softly.
As he spoke, Scarlett suddenly remembered.
Damian had said he would wait for her.
Even though part of her hadn’t truly believed he would, she still found herself glancing around the nearly empty street.
Sure enough, his car was nowhere to be seen.
A part of her wasn’t even surprised. His absence simply confirmed what she’d already suspected about his fleeting attentions.
Nolan caught every one of her small, searching movements. The sight sent another pang through him.
She had Vincent in her past and Damian crashing recklessly into her present. Why couldn’t
