She knew there were things she needed to say.

Nolan’s body gave the faintest tremor. But then he smiled, warm and steady. “Scarlett. Merry Christmas.”
She met his gaze and nodded. “Merry Christmas, Nolan.”
He held out the balloons he’d bought earlier. “These are for you. I thought we could let them go together. And-” a pause, almost shy-“you’re the first person to wish me a Merry Christmas.”
Hearing that, Scarlett thought of Damian.
Damian had been the first to wish her a Merry Christmas.
And Vincent…
He was probably with Sabrina right now.
She took the balloons. Her nose stung. “Thank you, Nolan.”
“Since you’re here,” he said, “let’s release them together.”
She nodded. “Okay.”
They walked to the center of the square. Under the soft orange glow of the streetlights, Nolan’s gaze was tender, unhurried.
Scarlett closed her eyes and made a silent wish. “I hope this year, I can get through this divorce cleanly. No complications.”
Seeing how seriously she wished, Nolan closed his eyes too. In the quiet of his own chest, he whispered, “I want to marry Scarlett. If anyone’s listening-please help me.”
He had never believed in wishes. Or signs. Or fate.
But now, he had nothing else to hold onto. So he tried.
Even if the odds were slim. Even if it meant nothing. He tried.
When he opened his eyes, Scarlett was looking at him.
He smiled. “Ready?”
She nodded. “Ready.”

Together, in the center of the square, they let go.
The balloons drifted up into the dark, growing smaller and smaller until they disappeared.
Scarlett looked away first.
When she turned to Nolan, their eyes met.
The silence between them thickened.
After a moment, Scarlett’s voice came out hoarse. “Nolan. Let’s find somewhere to talk.”
He knew what she was going to say. He didn’t want to hear it.
And in that instant, he couldn’t hold back anymore. He stepped forward and pulled her into his
arms.
He held her tight, his chin resting on top of her head. His voice was rough, strained. “Don’t say it. I don’t want to hear it.”
He knew too well that once those words were spoken, nothing between them would ever be the
same.
Even a simple meal together might become something she’d hesitate to give him.
Scarlett’s face was pressed against his chest. She heard the plea underneath his words. Her voice cracked. “Nolan. Why do you do this to yourself?”
“I don’t mind waiting another five years,” he said. “I just don’t want to lose the right to even see you.”
Her chest ached. But she forced herself to say it. “Nolan, you and I…”
He cut her off. “Scarlett. Please. Don’t.”
She pushed through. “Nolan, we really…”
His voice dropped, almost to a whisper. “Please. I’m begging you.”
He had lowered himself so far. Scarlett couldn’t bring herself to finish.
But she knew he understood.
Maybe it was better not to say it out loud.
