So she got visibly impatient. She shoved Damian away hard, glaring at him with anger written all over her face.

She didn't say a word, but her eyes had already welled up.

Seeing her like that, Damian's chest tightened. He slowly let her go and turned his face away.

On the nightstand, the phone started ringing again.

Finally free, Scarlett grabbed for it without wasting a second. She snatched it up and answered immediately.

"Vincent," she said, her voice urgent as soon as the line connected.

Vincent's voice came through, edged with accusation. "Took you long enough."

Scarlett didn't bite. "Is that all you wanted?"

Vincent paused. "The school called. Vanessa's got a stomachache. She's in the ER at the same hospital you're in. Go check on her."

Every word carried that commanding tone—no concern for Scarlett's current state, no consideration.

She was quiet for a beat. "How exactly am I supposed to do that?"

"I'll have someone take you. I'm not back yet, so you'll have to handle it."

Instinctively, Scarlett started to refuse. "Vincent, I'm not going. I—"

Before she could finish, Damian's arm snaked around her waist, and he pulled her into another kiss.

At the same time, Vincent kept talking on the phone, but Damian reached over and ended the call after only a few more words.

Scarlett struggled against him, but Damian held tight, kissing her hard.

A moment later, though, she bit down—hard—on his tongue the second it slipped past her lips.

The pain made him pull back instantly.

Damian covered his mouth. The sting was sharp enough to drill into bone, but he barely seemed to notice. He just kept his eyes locked on hers.

Scarlett lay back down and turned away from him. Didn't say a word.

Damian knew she was probably upset. Or worried. Maybe both.

Once the pain in his mouth eased a little, he climbed onto the hospital bed too. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin in the crook of her neck. "If you're worried, I'll go with you. We'll check on her."

Scarlett didn't respond. But she didn't push him away either.

Damian could tell—she was genuinely concerned about Vanessa.

So he sat up, then leaned over and lifted her into his arms.

Scarlett protested. "Damian, what are you doing now?"
