Finally, Vincent turned around. He crouched down in front of Vanessa and gently brushed her cheek with his fingers. "Sweetheart, do you want to go to the hospital and see Mommy?"

Vanessa shook her head. "Daddy, I... I don't wanna go to the hospital."

Vincent's gaze flickered. "Then do you want to see Mommy?"

Vanessa shook her head again, silent this time.

Vincent didn't push. He stood up and looked at Lily. "Then we'll do what Ms. Monroe said. No hospital."

Lily opened her mouth to argue, but Vincent had already moved on. "Let's eat breakfast."

That was that. Lily swallowed whatever she'd been about to say.

Breakfast was laid out, and the three of them sat down together—Vincent, Sabrina, and Vanessa.

Vincent scrolled through his phone as he ate. News alerts popped up: Daniel's partners had pulled out of their deals overnight, one of his top artists was caught up in a major scandal, and Lennox Group's stock was already taking a hit.

Something about it all made his chest tighten. He pushed through the rest of his meal in a few quick bites and stood up.

Sabrina looked up, confused. "Vincent? What's wrong?"

"I'm heading out."

"Where? What's the rush?"

"Lennox Group is in trouble. I'm going to check on things. Can you take Vanessa to school? I'll call you around noon."

He didn't wait for an answer. He just walked out.

But he barely made it past the front door before he stopped. Amanda was standing on the cobblestone path, watching him calmly.

Vincent blinked, surprised, but walked over anyway.

Before he could speak, Amanda cut in, "Where are you off to?"

"Lennox Manor."

Amanda already knew about Daniel's company problems, but she wasn't here for that. "Vincent, we need to talk."

He shook his head. "Whatever it is, it can wait till I'm back."

She saw how eager he was to leave and dropped all pretense. "If I wait any longer, the grass on your head's gonna be tall enough to graze cattle."
