Damian shook off the thought and stepped forward anyway, helping Nathan clear the dishes without being asked again.
Once everything was put away, Nathan sat back down and gently adjusted the blanket over Scarlett. "What do you want for lunch?" he asked.
"Nothing fancy, just something simple."
Nathan smiled. "Then I'll let Mom know so she can prep it for you."
Scarlett smiled back. "Thanks."
Since Damian had walked in, Scarlett had only glanced at him once. After that, she made a point not to look his way.
Still, even without looking directly, she could feel his presence in her peripheral vision.
Nathan stayed a bit longer, then stood and glanced at Scarlett. "Looks like you've got company now. I won't stick around. You two can catch up."
He grabbed his briefcase and started for the door.
But Scarlett's voice stopped him. "Didn't you say you were gonna take me downstairs for some air?"
Nathan turned back, his gaze sharp, knowing. He understood exactly what she was doing. But he didn't give in. "There's someone right here who can keep you company. Why do you still need me?"
Scarlett opened her mouth, then closed it. "Nathan, you—"
"I've gotta get to the office. I'll check on you later."
Damian spoke up before Nathan could leave. "Thanks, Nathan."
Nathan didn't stop walking, but his voice drifted back. "Wasn't for you."
Damian smiled faintly. "I know. But I won't waste it."
The door clicked shut behind Nathan.
Only then did Damian turn and walk toward the bed. He sat on the edge, his eyes fixed on Scarlett. No small talk. "Your answer. Did you think it over?"
Last night's agreement hung in the air between them.
Scarlett met his gaze. "Yeah. I made up my mind."
Damian leaned forward slightly, arms braced against the mattress, anticipation flickering beneath his calm surface. "So? What is it?"
Just as Scarlett opened her mouth to speak, the door swung open.
She looked over. Nolan and Sean walked in, both in white coats. Behind them trailed a handful of interns and residents, faces serious and focused.
Damian's jaw tightened. Irritation flickered across his face before he reined it in.
