He remained seated, numb and motionless, for a long while before finally rising to settle the check.
After leaving the café, he drove back to Ravenshade Villa.
Getting out of the car took considerable mental preparation. He kept wondering—what if Sabrina showed up and blocked his path? What would he do then?
Yet when he finally stepped onto the driveway, there was nothing but wind and swirling snow.
As Vincent walked through the front gate, he glanced curiously toward the neighboring villa.
All he could see was the gate left slightly ajar, with no other signs of activity.
Once inside the hall, the house felt unusually hollow—absent were the usual sounds of laughter or cheerful conversation.
Hanging his coat on the entryway rack, he asked Lily, "Where's Vanessa?"
Lily glanced upstairs. "She's still in her room. She hasn't come down all day."
Vincent removed his watch and loosened his tie. "I'll go up and see her," he said as he headed for the staircase.
Upstairs, he pushed open Vanessa's door without knocking.
She was still in bed, awake but unwilling to get up, staying there almost defiantly.
Vincent approached quietly and sat on the edge of the mattress. He gently pulled back the covers, revealing her face.
It was clear she had been crying—her eyes were red and puffy.
Instead of offering comfort, Vincent looked down at her, a touch of irritation in his voice. "What's this? Planning to stay in bed indefinitely?"
Vanessa didn't respond, pulling the blanket back over her head.
Vincent tugged it down again, his tone sharper now. "How long are you going to keep this up?"
Finally, Vanessa burst into tears. "Daddy, I want Sabrina here with me."
Even as she cried, Vincent didn't soften. He kept his voice low but firm. "I need to ask you something, okay?"
Hearing his calmer tone, Vanessa thought his anger had passed. She nodded quietly. "Okay."
Vincent studied her face intently. "When Mommy hurt her leg—did you push her down the stairs?"
Vanessa went still. "Daddy... you don't believe me?"
Her wide, bright eyes made her look utterly innocent.
In that moment, Vincent felt another wave of regret. Maybe he never should have asked.
