Scarlett answered, "Yeah, I got it."
Damian replied, "I'll hang up once you're inside the mall."
Faintly, Scarlett could hear the sounds of children playing in the background from Damian's side.
She knew he had taken Eric out for some fun.
Scarlett still had a good twenty-minute walk ahead before reaching the mall. Not wanting to keep Damian waiting too long, she said, "I'm basically there already. You can go ahead and hang up—go enjoy your time with Eric."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Damian sensed something was off, but he didn't press it. Instead, he said into the phone, "Eric says he wants you to come play with him."
Then he called out to Eric a couple of times on his end.
A moment later, Scarlett heard Eric's bright young voice. "Hey, what's up?"
Unable to see Damian's expression through the phone, Scarlett only heard his calm tone. "Didn't you say you were missing Scarlett?"
Eric seemed to catch on quickly. He let out a couple of "Oh—oh!" sounds before adding eagerly, "Yeah, I do miss her."
Scarlett couldn't help but laugh. "Eric, sweetie, don't let Damian put words in your mouth. You don't have to say things you don't really mean."
"I'm not!" Eric insisted, his voice clear and sincere. "I really do miss you."
Hearing him call her that, Scarlett hesitated—should she correct him?
But after a brief thought, she decided to let it slide.
"Scarlett?" Eric ventured again when she didn't respond right away.
Scarlett snapped back to attention. "Yeah, I'm here."
Eric asked seriously, "Can you come play with me?"
Considering her own plans, Scarlett had to decline. "I can't make it for playing today, sweetie."
"Oh... okay," Eric replied, disappointment evident in his tone.
But then Scarlett added gently, "But you're more than welcome to come over to my place for a visit."
Eric perked up instantly. "Yes!" Then, as if remembering something, he asked cautiously, "Can Damian come too?"
Scarlett paused briefly before answering, "Yeah, of course he can."
When she agreed, Eric cheered happily, "Awesome! Then I want to come visit your house!"
But Scarlett felt she should be upfront. "Eric, just so you know—Clara will be there too."
At the mention of Clara, Eric's mood visibly dropped. "Oh... well then, I—ow!"
