Scarlett leaned her head against Damian's chest and replied in a raspy whisper, "Okay."
For a few quiet minutes, they just held each other. Then Scarlett straightened up and said, "I'll ask the staff to fix you something to eat and bring it up."
But Damian tightened his grip on her hand. "Don't worry about it. I'm not really hungry."
Scarlett looked at him, her expression blank. She heard him ask softly, "How are you holding up? Feeling any better?"
She nodded. "Yeah. A lot better."
Even after the scare, she wasn't one to fall apart over a rough moment.
Seeing her much more composed, Damian felt a wave of relief.
He glanced toward the bouquet on the nightstand and told her, "I passed a florist earlier and picked these up for you. Thought they might brighten your mood a little."
Scarlett looked at the flowers and smiled. "They're lovely. Thank you."
Damian added, "I also grabbed some pastries from that bakery downtown. Want to try them together?"
Scarlett wasn't particularly hungry, but since Damian hadn't eaten, she agreed. "Sure."
Damian brought over the box of treats. He laid a few out carefully on the nightstand, then selected a delicate, intricately shaped pastry. Bringing it close to her lips, he said, "I heard these are amazing. Want a taste?"
Scarlett eyed the pastry in his hand. After a brief pause, she said, "Thanks."
With that, she took a small bite.
After chewing slowly, she found it really was delicious. So she gently guided Damian's hand—and the pastry—toward his own lips.
At the same time, she said warmly, "It's really good. You should try some too."
As she spoke, her eyes sparkled, as if lit with little stars.
Feeling her hand over his, Damian's heart gave a small, unexpected flutter.
And the pastry she was offering him was the same one she had just bitten into.
In that moment, Damian couldn't help wondering—had Scarlett finally let him into her heart?
Lost in thought, he didn't take a bite right away. Noticing his hesitation, Scarlett assumed he didn't want it and began to lower her hand.
Damian snapped out of it and quickly caught her wrist. Guiding her hand back, he took a generous bite of the pastry, finishing nearly all of what remained.
He looked at her with a soft, overflowing smile. "You're right. It's really good."
Under his tender gaze, Scarlett lowered her eyes shyly.

A thought crossed Vincent's mind. Is Damian planning to spend the night?
