Nathan's voice stayed cold on the other end of the call. "Alright. I'm hanging up."
Damian leaned against the car with an easy grin. "Okay, Nathan. You hang up first."
The line went dead immediately after that.
Standing behind him, Scarlett watched the way Damian had spoken so carefully and respectfully to Nathan, and she couldn't stop herself from laughing softly.
Damian slid his phone back into his pocket and turned around. Before he could say anything, Scarlett lifted a brow and teased, "I thought you said you weren't nervous?"
Damian instantly straightened up like he was defending himself in court. "First of all, I'm not nervous around Nathan. I just don't want him stressing over you."
Scarlett understood perfectly.
Someone like Damian, with his status and personality, never needed to humble himself for anybody. The only reason he treated Nathan with that kind of patience was because Nathan was her family.
Because he loves me, he respects the people I love too.
Vincent was never capable of that.
The thought alone made Scarlett's eyes sting again.
The second Damian noticed her expression change, panic immediately crossed his face. He thought she was upset because he'd been pretending to act tough earlier.
He quickly grabbed her hand.
"Okay, fine, maybe I was showing off a little," he admitted helplessly. "But seriously, what guy isn't at least a little intimidated by his girlfriend's brother?"
Scarlett burst out laughing.
Only then did Damian finally relax. He pulled her into his arms and lowered his voice gently near her ear.
"You've been worried this whole time, haven't you?"
Scarlett rested her face against his chest and answered quietly, "Not really."
Damian's voice turned lower.
"I heard you went to see Vincent last night. Knowing him, I doubt he made things easy for you."
Scarlett smiled faintly, though the bitterness in it was impossible to hide.
"I'm used to it."
Damian tightened his arms around her immediately, his expression turning serious.
"Don't ever go back and beg him for anything again," he said firmly. "No matter what happens, he's not worth it."
Scarlett nodded against him, her voice catching slightly.
"Okay. I know."
Damian held her a little longer before finally letting her go reluctantly.
"I should take you home," he said softly. "If Nathan waits too long, he'll start worrying."
Scarlett nodded quietly. "Okay."
Even though she didn't want to leave either, she kept that feeling hidden.
Before leaving, she still went upstairs to see Ruth.
