After a short pause, Sabrina broke the silence and spoke to Vincent. "Vanessa's upstairs. She said she's handcrafting wedding gifts for us."
Vincent gave a quick nod. "I'll head up to check on her."
"I'll come with you," Sabrina replied.
When the pair reached the second floor, Vanessa's bedroom door stood ajar.
The young girl spotted them the instant they stepped into view and hastily tucked her unfinished gift under the desk.
Vincent walked inside, gazing at his daughter with fond amusement. "What present are you putting together?"
Vanessa kept up a playful air of secrecy, drawing out her words slowly. "It's a surprise. You two will find out soon enough."
Sabrina slipped off her house shoes and stepped onto the soft carpet before sitting beside the small table. She spoke gently to Vanessa. "You don't need to stay up late making these things. Just your thought alone makes your dad and me really happy."
Vanessa pouted, sounding dejected. "Once you marry Dad, you'll be my new mom. I just want to be good to my mom."
The word "mom" triggered an abrupt, reflexive reaction from Vincent. He ordered sharply without room for compromise. "Call her Sabrina from now on."
Confused, Vanessa pressed on. "But why, Dad?"
His features hardened into a cold frown. "Scarlett is your mom."
"I thought once you and Sabrina get married..." Vanessa tried to argue further.
Vincent's expression darkened by the second.
Afraid the little girl would anger him, Sabrina cut in quickly, "Vanessa, listen to your dad. I'm not your birth mom, but I'll always love you like my own daughter no matter what."
Vanessa knit her brows, stole a nervous glance at Vincent, then stubbornly insisted to Sabrina. "But I really wanna call you Mom."
Sabrina pulled the child into a comforting hug. "Be good and follow your dad's wishes."
Standing off to the side, Vincent was suddenly overwhelmed with restless irritation. He spun around and walked straight out into the hallway.
Out in the corridor, he lit a cigarette. Pulling smoke down into his lungs calmed his frayed nerves slightly, yet a heavy weight lingered in his chest, making it hard to breathe. He could not sort out his own true feelings.
Did he truly want to marry Sabrina?
