Damian stood by the doorway and cracked a quiet smile after hearing Scarlett's reply.

He chose not to step inside and intrude, heading downstairs as promised instead.

Roughly 15 minutes passed waiting on the ground floor before Scarlett came down the staircase.

Damian had picked out an outfit for her: a slim cocoa-toned midi dress paired with a collared blouse and a matching long overcoat, finished off with casual everyday sneakers.

Damian stood centered in the entry hall, unable to tear his gaze away from the second she appeared.

When she drew near, Scarlett lifted her head. "Let's head out."

Damian grinned but stayed rooted in place, holding out his open palm toward her.

Scarlett caught on instantly; he wanted her to take his hand.

With no other choice, she slipped her palm into his, and his fingers curled firmly around hers.

"From today onward, you hold my hand every single time we step outside. Got it?" His tone left no room for argument.

"It's almost nine. If we don't leave now, Nathan's going to file a missing-person report for sure," Scarlett urged.

Damian refused to let the topic drop. "Will you agree to my rule first?"

"I promise, alright?" Scarlett gave in with a sigh.

"Your answer sounds half-hearted." Damian frowned.

"You're acting like a spoiled kid who got what he wanted yet still complains," Scarlett huffed.

Noticing her slow pace and the lingering ache in her legs from earlier, Damian bent down and swept her off her feet into his arms. He leaned his head toward her. "I'd say you're the one who got what you wanted last night."

Scarlett's cheeks flamed red instantly.

She understood his hidden meaning all too well.

And he wasn't wrong. She really was the one getting the better end of the deal.

Damian was... ridiculously good at that.

But she couldn't help wondering, was he so intense because he had a lot of experience? Was that why he was so good?

She'd never cared about that before. But right now, she couldn't stop herself from caring.
