Sabrina's mood soured when Vincent refused to meet her eyes, yet worry prodded her to press on. "Vincent, what exactly happened?"
Vincent had no intention of admitting he'd gone after Scarlett or gotten punched by Damian.
He replied coldly and flatly, "Nothing at all."
Sabrina didn't buy his excuse, nodding toward the bruising on his face. "But those marks all over your cheek..."
"Got clumsy and hit something after too much liquor last night." Vincent brushed it off casually.
Seeing that he wanted no discussion of the prior night's events, Sabrina dropped the subject. "You must be hungry. I'll head downstairs and bring something up for you."
With that, she turned and walked down toward the ground floor.
Lily stood in the kitchen, heating broth when Sabrina stepped inside.
"Lily," Sabrina called out.
Hearing her, Lily turned around. "Ms... Mrs. Stewart, what is it?"
She'd almost called her Ms. Monroe, but she caught herself in time, knowing Vincent would be furious.
No flicker of anger crossed Sabrina's blank, unreadable features over the title.
She studied Lily and asked suspiciously, "What happened to Vincent last night?"
Lily froze briefly, then answered carefully, "Mr. Stewart got dead drunk; I fetched him home myself. Nothing out of the ordinary took place."
Doubt clouded Sabrina's expression as she stared hard at Lily. "I hope you aren't lying to me."
Lily ducked her head deferentially. "I wouldn't dare."
Glancing at the simmering soup pot, Sabrina gave her orders. "You may leave the kitchen now. I'll take this up to him personally."
Lily bowed in compliance and stepped out without argument.
Sabrina filled a ceramic bowl with warm broth and carried it back upstairs.
Vincent was propped upright against the bed's headboard by the time she entered, covered from the waist up beneath bed linens.
Sabrina set the bowl on the nightstand and looked at him. "Have some soup. It should help."
Vincent's deep eyes locked onto her. "How long did I sleep?"
"Nearly an entire day," Sabrina answered.
"An entire day?" he muttered quietly, stunned.
Sabrina nodded. "Yeah. Is something wrong?"
Vincent's thoughts drifted to Scarlett.
He remembered climbing through Scarlett's window last night. He remembered wanting to do something to her.
Then Damian showed up and landed blows on him.
