For the first time, he felt a flicker of regret—regret for forcing Vincent to marry Scarlett all those years ago.
He had once believed that after Scarlett gave birth to Vanessa, their relationship would grow warmer.
Five years had passed, yet their bond had never deepened.
He'd hoped pushing them to have a second child would mend their rift, but he finally realized now that all his efforts had been futile.
After leaving the Stewart Manor, Vincent drove back to Ravenshade Villa in a turbulent, irritable mood.
The moment he stepped into the main hall, Lily walked out from the kitchen.
Seeing him return, she hurried forward. "Sir, you're back."
Vincent's leg still ached badly, leaving him limping. He did not spare her a single glance, merely uttering a cold reply. "Mm."
Lily stepped closer and blocked his path, her tone laced with concern. "Sir, what happened to your leg?"
Vincent finally looked at her, his voice icy and detached. "It's nothing fatal."
Sensing his terrible mood, Lily did not back down. She pressed on anxiously. "Sir, I haven't seen Vanessa in days. Won't you go check on her next door?"
Vincent's irritation flared sharply. "Maria is with her. Vanessa will be fine. Don't worry."
Lily could not set her heart at ease. She reminded him uneasily, "No matter what, Maria is still an outsider. How can you trust her to look after Vanessa alone? What if something goes wrong?"
Tired of her persistent questioning, Vincent pinched the bridge of his nose and spoke in a low, weary tone, "I'm tired. I'm going upstairs to rest."
Watching his cold, unyielding back, Lily grew frustrated. "If you won't go, then I will."
With that, she stormed out of the main hall.
Vincent heard her words, but his chest was too tangled in irritation to care. He paid it no mind and headed upstairs on his own.
Lily rushed toward the villa gate and nearly collided with Sabrina, who was just walking out of the neighboring villa.
She managed to stop herself just in time, avoiding the crash.
Startled by the sudden encounter, Lily greeted her nervously. "Ms. Monroe."
Sabrina's expression turned cold, her tone sharp with displeasure. "Why are you in such a rush? Where are you going?"
Lily answered honestly, "I'm going to check on Vanessa."
She paid no further attention to Sabrina and headed straight for the main hall, determined to busy herself with work.
Only constant chores could quiet her chaotic thoughts and ease her worries for Vanessa.
Standing in the cold snow, Sabrina pulled out her phone and sent a message to Maria.
"Mom, don't be too harsh on Vanessa. My wedding with Vincent is in two days. If she's acting off in any way, Vincent will definitely notice."
Maria replied quickly, "I know what I'm doing. I have my limits. I won't go too far."
Right next to Ravenshade Villa stood Orchid Villa.
Inside Orchid Villa, Maria sat lazily in the dining room, leaning fully against the back of her chair. She propped her long legs up on the dining table, shaking them continuously as she scrolled through short videos on her phone.
She laughed loudly and unrestrainedly whenever she came across an amusing clip.
After reading her daughter's message, she felt thoroughly annoyed. Though she was extremely unwilling to hold back, she knew Sabrina was right.
Vincent and Sabrina's wedding was only two days away. If anything happened to Vanessa, Vincent would surely be displeased.
