Julian had anticipated this possibility. Once informed, he knew exactly how to respond.
Diana and Florence had reached the same conclusion. Just as Diana picked up her phone to call Julian, her screen lit up first.
Julian Sterling.
She paused for half a second before answering. She had not yet spoken when his voice came through, cool and edged with frost. "Ms. Hutton. Was Megan's bail arranged by your family?"
Diana almost forgot that this was Jouleston, the Sterling family's territory. News would never reach her faster than it reached Julian. If anything, it would reach him first.
He had clearly investigated before placing the call.
She glanced at her father and did not conceal the truth. "Yes. My father arranged it. We only just found out."
Silence lingered on the other end.
When Julian spoke again, irony thinned his tone. "I should have notified the station in advance. I truly didn't expect Mr. Hutton to treat his own daughter's life so lightly."
Diana had not lowered the volume. Julian had not softened his voice. If anything, he raised it slightly.
Every word carried through the room. Mocked by his future son-in-law, Theodore felt his face stiffen.
When he looked up and met Albus' condemning gaze, he found no defense. His decision had given Megan the opportunity.
Diana noted the conflict in her father's expression and continued evenly, "Our family will give you an explanation. But right now, Sydney's safety comes first."
During her years in the Hutton household, Megan had used its resources to cultivate connections everywhere. Even with her identity exposed, there would still be people driven by profit who would help her. She could not have disappeared under police supervision on her own.
