Julian lifted a brow. “Just because you’re fine, does that mean I’m not allowed to stay with you?”

Sydney shot him a look. “I just don’t want you delaying important work because of me.”

“Work is important.” Julian nodded. “And family isn’t?”

That made Sydney pause.

He said family. Only then did it sink in. In his heart, the two of them were already one unit, just as they had been when they were young.

The warmth she always felt from him slowly eased the tension in her chest.

That was right. What did it matter whether the Huttons were involved? She still had him.

Her eyes brightened, but she said, “What family? When did I agree to that?”

She was grown now, not the little girl who would follow him without a second thought the moment he took her

hand.
