Chapter 614 Stepping Back

Warren said, “Tyrone, it’s over. We’re not holding it against you. We trust your character.”

Miriam nodded. “You and Aella are engaged now. You’re family to us. We know you’re not the kind of boy who messes around.”

Their understanding wrapped around Tyrone like warmth. He fell silent for a few seconds, then turned to Aella,

“I’ve been busy with work lately. You’re starting school again soon and will have a lot to prepare. What I mean is, we’re engaged, but you’re still young. I’d feel better if you stayed with the Reids for now.”

Warren and Miriam were so pleased that they could barely hide it, but they didn’t answer right away. They looked to Aella instead.

Aella lifted her eyes to Tyrone, hesitant. “But you’re still hurt.”

Tyrone lowered his gaze, hiding whatever flickered there. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.”

Something felt off to Aella, but she couldn’t pinpoint it.

Before they got engaged, Tyrone had said that she could stay with her parents afterward. On paper, him bringing it up now wasn’t strange. And yet, it still felt strange.

She didn’t insist. “Okay, I’ll listen to you. I’ll keep living at home.”

Miriam smiled when Aella agreed. “Since you’ve talked it through, Aella will stay with us.”

Warren nodded, too. “And Tyrone, you can come by anytime.”

In their world, it wasn’t unusual for engaged couples to live together.

However, as Aella’s parents, they would rather have their daughter stay under their roof a little longer.

Seeing that there were no objections, Tyrone stood up. “Then it’s settled. I have a few things to take care of, so I’ll head out.”

Aella rose with him. “I’ll walk you out.”

They left the house side by side. Tyrone clearly had something weighing on him. With every step, Aella’s mood dipped..

The sweetness from before the engagement was gone. Tyrone didn’t even reach for her hand.

He opened the car door. Aella caught his sleeve. They looked at each other in silence for a few seconds.

“Tyrone,” she asked softly. “Did something happen? Yesterday, we agreed to live together. Why did you suddenly change your mind?”

It wasn’t that she couldn’t live without him, nor that she had to move in. He just didn’t feel like himself today.

Tyrone shook his head. “Aella, I’m going to be slammed with work for a while. I won’t be able to take care of you properly. You’ve never really lived away from your parents. It’s easier staying here, and it lets me relax.”

He spoke patiently, as if he were presenting facts. “Besides, we’re still young. We should focus on work and school instead of getting lost in romance.”
