Godfrey met Gwen at the staircase. She smiled at him while he raised an eyebrow.
He went up to the mezzanine and approached Isolde. She looked troubled and gazed at him strangely, as if fighting internally, and whatever caused that fight had to do with him.
"What did she say about me?" Godfrey looked at Gwen and back at Isolde, who stretched out her hand and touched his chest.
She exhaled. "Gwen said you’re not real. That—!"
"In a way, I’m not."
Godfrey’s reply made Isolde’s eyes widen. "What? What do you mean by you’re not real?!"
Godfrey leaned on the railing, twirling the wine in his glass cup. "Iso... this man is the unknown king of the Pathan people. I’m not supposed to exist since I wasn’t real in the first place."
Isolde’s irises trembled. She finally realized. Gwen had actually told her a secret about Cain. He was just like Godfrey, a make-belief brought into reality!
"She said Cain isn’t real just like you," Isolde said rapidly.
Godfrey stood straight. "What? She said Cain is like me. A belief of another race? But you said he has just one strange summon. That doesn’t make any sense. I don’t even know what to say or think."
"Let’s find her."
He agreed with Isolde’s suggestion, but after searching the hall, they couldn’t find Gwen. Godfrey ran outside and found her entering a black vehicle.
He dashed toward her and held the door she was about to close.
Gwen raised an eyebrow.
"We need to talk?" Godfrey said, staring right into her eyes. There was something about this woman’s gaze that unsettled him. Like she coveted him.
He could see that desire in her eyes, and she wasn’t trying to hide it.
"Hop in then," Gwen smirked.
Godfrey’s eyes narrowed. "It’s best if you come inside."
"I’ve stayed here too long. I’ve got other things to do...."
"Then what do you mean by Cain isn’t real?" Godfrey interrupted when he saw this wasn’t going anywhere.
"You said he’s just like me," he added.
"Just like you? I never said that. All I know is that he existed before the apocalypse but... not as a human. That’s all I know."
"Where did you get that information from? Who told you, and what was he? He’s a summoner. Only earth humans can be Summoners," Godfrey asked rapidly.
"Slow down, boy. I never said he’s not human, and I never said he’s not from earth," Gwen responded.
"That’s all. Now let go of my door."
Godfrey shut the door and watched the car drive off. He was more confused than ever. Why couldn’t she just speak to him plainly? Who told her what she knew?
Or was this all a lie?
All thoughts of her being a clone were scratched off since she had existed before the emergence of mana.
He was growing into the belief Pathan made, but if there was truth in what Gwen said, Cain might have had all his abilities from the start.
If they were to factorise belief, then the usual concepts wouldn’t work anymore. Just as they did not apply to him.
