The next morning, Rick stood in Godfrey’s dressing room. It was filled with lots of clothing, and since Godfrey wasn’t a pro at selecting outfits, Rick had to choose for him.
As a butler, he had spent almost a century attending to past Pendragon Heads. For an occasion like this and for someone like Godfrey, he had just what would work.
Naturally, Godfrey would have put on a hood and strolled to the venue without a care in the world.
"Here it is." Rick spun with an attire resting on his forearm.
Without a word, Godfrey put it on.
He wore a cream-white shirt tailored from smooth, flowing fabric. The sleeves were full and slightly billowed, narrowing neatly at the wrists, giving the garment a refined yet effortless grace. A long silk cravat hung from his collar, tied loosely at the throat before falling in twin ribbons down his chest.
His trousers rose high to his waist, fitted at the hips before falling into wide, elegant folds that concealed the shape of his legs. The dark fabric contrasted sharply with the pale upper garments, drawing the eye upward and emphasizing his tall frame.
Every piece seemed understated at first glance, yet together they formed the image of a man born to command authority.
"It was made just for you." Rick praised as he watched Godfrey examine himself before a tall mirror.
"It feels comfortable." Godfrey’s voice was low.
Rick smiled. "Of course. It feels like you’re not even wearing anything. I believe that is what you like."
"You’re not wrong." Godfrey looked at himself, then focused on his Black-Out eyes. He blinked, then shut his eyes for a while before opening them, yet those black sclera and golden irises remained.
He couldn’t switch it off on his own. His eyes narrowed at this revelation. The brain naturally took something and made it become natural after it was kept that way for a good period of time. Things like walking patterns, sitting posture, and many other.
It had become natural for his brain to always be on high alert, hence the Black-Out State eyes. Looking at his majestic stature, Godfrey could see scars.
These scars weren’t visible, but they were there.
Things his strength or physical healing couldn’t erase.
His eyes were one of them.
"Something has changed about you, Master Godfrey. I can see it on your face and from your decision. You were the last person on my mind who would willingly step into the public eye to be interviewed." Rick’s statement made Godfrey chuckle softly.
"I wouldn’t have believed it myself..." He suddenly turned, facing Rick. "You’ve lived for so long. Have you ever died?"
The butler blinked and shook his head. "I wouldn’t be here if I had."
"Well, I’ve experienced it. Twice, or was it three times? It’s the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. It fills even the most powerful man with a chill, an embrace that rips through your soul. When you’ve experienced that, you naturally want to avoid it, but I’ve realized I shall face another in the near future... the worst feeling, of which I’m certain gods do not want to experience."
He tucked his hands into his pockets.
"Since I already have my back against the wall, since I already know how it ends, since I have to take that path to live once more.... What’s there to fear anymore?"
Godfrey took a deep breath, then slowly let it go.
"I’m nineteen, but I already know how people work, Rick. But if that scares me away, then the platform will only be occupied by those who continue these things. I can change that, and today I will march through the most populated street in Staten like a king, with humanoid summons and my knights beside me."
He patted Rick’s shoulder.
"I wanted to carve out my own path, but this is the way. I will carve my name into their hearts. I will make the authorities shudder as their century-old win finally comes crumbling down. It’s just one city, but it’s the beginning. Soon... when they see the colour gold... they’ll whisper of the king. Of me."
With that, Godfrey walked out of the room, both hands back in his pockets.
