Chapter 283: Chapter 283: Why Wasn’t It You Who Died?

Walker looked at the maid assigned to care for Madam Grant and asked, "Where’s the medicine?"

The maid, terrified by the scene that had just unfolded, finally snapped out of it. She scrambled to find the medicine and gave it to Madam Grant.

A moment later, some color returned to Madam Grant’s face, but her expression remained grim.

Walker said, "Fainting for real won’t help you. I do what I say."

He looked at the maid. "Pack all of Madam Grant’s things. She leaves the day after tomorrow."

He had to arrange the asset transfers tomorrow, so he couldn’t leave just yet.

"You bastard! You animal! Why wasn’t it you who died back then!" Madam Grant glared at Walker with utter revulsion. "Julian was such a good boy, but his fate was so cruel. If he were still alive, he would never treat me like this! He would have been a good, filial son, and he never would have defied me!"

Walker’s lip curled, and his eyes grew even colder. "Too bad my older brother is dead."

"What a curse!"

Madam Grant burst into tears. Loathing both Walker and Chloe, she pointed at them and began to curse.

But Walker walked over to Chloe and took her hand. "Let’s go."

Chloe had watched the whole scene unfold as if it were a play. She pulled her hand free, her tone mocking. "Your grandmother is about to keel over from anger, and you still want to leave with me?"

Walker’s deep, dark eyes were fixed on her. "Yes. I’m going to be reviled for this, Chloe. You can’t abandon me now."

"Hah!" Chloe let out a cold laugh. "What do your problems have to do with me? If anything, I was the one who got set up because of you. Do you think I’ll just let it go because you did all this?"

The gloom clouding Walker’s features deepened. "What more do you want?" he asked.

"A divorce," Chloe said.

"Impossible."

Walker’s tone was just as resolute. "Chloe, I will never agree. Not in this life, and not in the next."

The last trace of a smile vanished from Chloe’s face. She turned and walked away.

’This man is insane!’

The wind outside cleared Chloe’s head a bit. She heard footsteps behind her and said calmly, "It doesn’t matter if you don’t agree. The court hearing will be soon." 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

He didn’t say a word, but his meaning was clearer than any words could be.

It expressed one thing and one thing only.

A man like that wasn’t worthy of Miss Reed.

Old Mrs. Sutton’s granddaughter deserved the best man in the world.

And clearly, this man wasn’t it.

Chloe got into the car. "Back to the hospital."

"You got it!" Daniel Hayes replied.

The car shot forward, leaving the man far behind.

Daniel Hayes glanced in the rearview mirror. "Miss Reed," he said, "I took care of a couple of tails while I was waiting. Were they sent by that guy back there?"

Chloe gave him a surprised look. "You took care of them?"
