"Aunt Jensen, are you all right?" Fiona Linton asked, composing herself and showing a touch of concern.
Judith Pierce sighed. "I thought I’d prepared myself, but when I see little Noah having to endure so much pain, knowing he’ll have to live in this shadow for decades to come... I just lose control."
As she spoke, her voice choked up again. "He’s so little... He’s Julian’s only child. How could Sunny Reed be so vicious..."
Fiona Linton quickly pulled out a tissue and handed it to her. "Aunt Jensen, don’t lose hope. Medical science is advancing every day. I’m sure he can be treated."
At these words, Judith Pierce grasped her hand, her eyes pleading. "Fiona, will you examine him? Please, see if there’s any chance of recovery. He’s only three years old! His life has just begun. He can’t spend his entire life in a wheelchair."
Fiona Linton nodded at once. "Of course, I’ll examine him. But you need to take care of yourself, too."
Judith Pierce wiped away her tears and turned to look toward the living room. When she saw Noah sitting in Walker Grant’s lap, his bright eyes fixed on Chloe Reed, a complex expression flickered across her face.
In the past, because of Sunny Reed, Chloe Reed had been distant and cold toward Noah Grant. But perhaps seeing how pitiable the child was, even her hardened heart had softened.
She no longer pushed the boy away.
After composing herself, Judith Pierce went back into the room.
"Should we have Fiona examine Noah?" she asked, looking at Walker Grant.
"We’d appreciate that, Doctor Linton," Walker Grant said softly, turning in Fiona Linton’s direction.
Fiona Linton replied, "It’s no trouble. If I can treat him, you just keep paying me. If I can’t, there’s nothing I can do."
She wanted to set expectations from the start, so they wouldn’t get their hopes up too high.
